Trip to USA - NYC - where else?

Hi all!

I have been to NYC before but this time we are taking along our 5 month old!

NYC will be our base as we are tagging the holiday onto other family commitments. After our time in NYC we will have about 7-8 days.

We can fly or take the train. Ideally no more than 4h flight.

In terms of what we like - baby won’t really know what he is seeing but anything family orientated and suitable would be welcome.

Our flight home will be from New York.

Any suggestions welcome.

Budget for the 7-8 trip would be about £1200 including travel and accommodation.

Thanks!

I think your budget is a bit tight. However, I would hire a car and just look around New York State. I think B&Bs will eat up your money, so camping, self catering or airbnb. You can then go at your own pace with your baby. Eating out will also eat into the budget,so self catering is what I would look for.

Depending on the time of year, I'd either head to Long Island and enjoy the beaches or hire a car and drive up into the Catskill mountains? Find some nice B & Bs to stay at or motels.... could be lovely.

Long Island is expensive in the season though. We have friends with a house on Fire Island and further down it gets more expensive when you are in The Hamptons.

Take a train to Boston to see the city and ferry over to Martha’s Vineyard. Lovely beaches.

We recently went Boston- cape cod to New York, family commitments in Boston and seeing friends in New York, we loved cape cod and wished we'd had way more time there!! V relaxing and beautiful, beaches are lovely. Not all that much going on, as in not super busy, not big malls or shops and stuff like there, there are plenty of amenities of course, but think far end of Cornwall rather than Home Counties...! so depends what you're looking for. Also depends on time of year.

Yes, meant Provincetown at top of Cape Cod not Martha’s Vineyard. Wild beaches and quirky.

Hi

Thanks for the comments.

Budget can be extended - I wasn’t really sure of how much would be needed.

We’re travelling in August! Very last minute.

Will look at Boston and Cape cod as others have mentioned that too.

One year we flew into BYC for a few days. We then got a rental car and drove for a week in Cape Cod, then drive for 4 nights in Boston. Flew home from there.

Another time we split the holiday between NYC and Washington DC

Periwinklethekittycat · 25/07/2018 17:37

I agree Boston and anywhere around New England :)

CraftyGin · 25/07/2018 17:41

In August, go North.

We stayed at Smugglers Notch in Vermont, and it was fantastic. They have a crèche, if you want to use it.

We just did a New England trip. We loved Cape Cod, but also went to Cape Ann. We stayed in a place called Rockport which is near Gloucester (perfect storm) and Manchester next to the sea. It was actually really lovely too and possible to do on a lower budget than Cape Cod as a bit cheaper for accommodation and no car required as you can get the commuter train from Boston.

On various trips we’ve found internal flights are far cheaper than taking the train between US cities. For example We flew Boston to DC this trip for £50 each but train would have been more than twice as much.
