We're heading to Cancun for family holiday. Our kids ages are 11, 6, 1.

We are looking at heading to xcaret when we're there, does anyone know if we will be able to hold baby round the underground river?

No, the water is pretty cold (it was Sept when we were there, so maybe hotter in summer) and deep in places. It’s amazing, but not for a wee one I don’t think.

@ineedwine99
We spent our honeymoon at the Occidental and it was incredible, so jealous! The beach is so nice and the food was amazing. Make sure you go to Xplor around the corner too.

Thanks Unihorn

We’ve just got back from Mexico. We took our two year old in the underground river at xcaret. It was fine, but I would advise going in early or later in the afternoon when it is quieter. From mid morning to mid afternoon it is horrendously busy, which makes it hard work.

Theimpossiblegirl · 29/07/2018 11:57

Going to the Riu Tequila on Saturday. Can't wait. Will post back with any insights. :)

PunkAssMoFo · 29/07/2018 11:59

This was the family of coati’s at our hotel.
You’ll have a ball op.

We went last year and booked a few trips with Thomson.
Then we came across these guys. Wish we had seen/heard of them prior to wasting time with other trips. We had private transport and the flexibility to amend what we were doing actually on the day. We were driving to one destination and DD spotted a road seller with fresh coconuts so we turned around and went and met the family and bought fresh coconuts to drink and coconut flesh with spices. Absolutely beautiful.

They gave us a great experience visiting Chicen Itza, Coba, swimming in a cenote, snorkelling and a speed boat trip. Air conditioned mini bus with cool towels and drinks. Looked after 2 adults with three kids aged 12, 10 and 7.

The guide, Ulises, was so friendly and helpful and we had first class treatment. Dealt with everything for us and showed us tourist sites and lesser known areas.

Their ethics and support for the local economy is great. They took photos of our days and uploaded them for us so we had time to just immerse ourselves in the experiences. It made a nice change for us to get photos of the whole family as well.

I am at the Riu Tequila at the moment. Totally loving Mexico and everything about it but haven’t been to Xcarat (not helpful).

ineedwine99 · 30/07/2018 09:09

Thanks @PunkAssMoFo that's good to know

Theimpossiblegirl · 30/07/2018 12:40

Ooh @MrsPatrickDempsey, is it lovely? We arrive Saturday. I'm so excited.

AlbusPercival · 30/07/2018 12:47

There are several
Rivers at xcaret, and it is marked by level of difficulty.

Baby would be fine in the easy one.

Hard one I’d suggest string swimmers only

AlbusPercival · 30/07/2018 12:59

Look at the link. It’s the maya river you want.

The blue river I had to haul on the ropes for the last bit. The maya one you could happily walk down taking photos, and it’s beautiful.

Make sure you stay for the show at night

MrsPatrickDempsey · 31/07/2018 00:14

@theimpossiblegirl
It’s lovely here. We are really enjoying our stay in Mexico. Will be sad to leave on Thursday.

Theimpossiblegirl · 31/07/2018 00:17

Ahh @MrsPatrickDempsey we could have had a Mumsnet meet-up over margaritas if you were there a few more days. :)
Glad you're enjoying. Any tips? x

MrsPatrickDempsey · 31/07/2018 02:08

My tips are:-

Don’t underestimate the sun. We had factor 50 on the first day and my son got burnt shoulders

The mozzies are quite vicious but haven’t found anything that particularly deters them

No shortage of sun beds around the pool

The beach is gorgeous

We booked tours via Maya Tours - turn left out of the hotel and go past Starbucks. Saved us $$$$$ and they were great trips.

Don’t forget payment for departure tax when you leave Mexico

The steak restaurant is really good. Don’t have to book but be there a bit before 1845 as there is a queue. We quite liked the Asian one too.

We have really enjoyed ourselves - you will too.

Hello there @MrsPatrickDempsey we're across the road in the Riu playacar. I'm waving! We leave on Wednesday and I don't want to go home! We were going to go to Xcaret yesterday but decided not to because of the unpredictability of the weather.

MrsPatrickDempsey · 31/07/2018 04:03

@user453678953 Hi! What a small world! How is the Playacar? We have done the Jungle Adrenaline Adventure today. Something very different.

user453678953 · 31/07/2018 16:46

It's really good. Are you enjoying the tequila? We've been in for a wander and it looks very nice. It's our second time in Mexico and I really don't want to Home. Another week would be perfect!

MrsPatrickDempsey · 31/07/2018 19:34

Yes it’s really nice thanks. Enjoy the rest of your holiday.
