Flying with ryanair

Has anyone flown with Ryanair recently? Can you advise me on the luggage?

My dd is flying with them next week with a group. She’s been told that they are taking hand luggage, so I’ve been to the website to have a look. From what I can see she can take a bag that is 554020 but it seems it will be taken off her at the gate and put in the hold if they haven’t paid for priority boarding, which I’m suspecting they haven’t. She can however take a teeny weeny hand bag 352020 into the cabin.

Is this right? Will she get her small suitcase taken off her and put in the hold? I have never flown Ryanair so I’m at a bit of a loss.

I've just got off a Ryanair flight!

Yes, the larger bag will be taken through security and then placed in the belly of the plane once at the gate. The little one can be taken on.

The bad thing about this is the liquids rule. However, I was able to check my hold luggage in at check in, so could leave my liquids in. Other people took them through security and then they were taken off them at boarding.

It's no big deal really. It's really only business people who get frustrated with this as they have to then wait for the baggage reclaim, rather than grab bag and go.

Linnet · 21/07/2018 22:25

Why would they take the liquids off you if you have already gone through security? And can’t you put them back in your little suitcase if it’s going to be taken off you and put in the hold anyway?

They won't take liquids off you if they meet the rules. We however were heading for a swimming competition and needed shedloads of suncream, so it was frustrating.

If you stick to the liquid guidelines you'll be fine.

Oh i see. She’s not going to have that much, so she should be fine on that aspect. So the bigger bag will go into the hold if they haven’t paid for priority boarding? How strict are they on the size of the little bag in the cabin? dd has a small rucksack/school bag that she could fit everything into but it’s not the 352020 dimensions. We’re not sure if she’ll be able to take the school bag into the cabin with her if they are very strict. Would they maybe stil take that one away and put it in the hold?

Not that strict as long as it's not too bulky and doesn't have stuff hanging out of it. A rucksack/school bag will be fine as long as it's closed

DD flew with them 3 weeks ago and had the maximum size handbag allowed. She said that they didn't check the handbags. The "cabin baggage" was taken off them when boarding. Unless you need to dash strait off after landing I don't think it is worth paying for priority boarding.

They never checked our dimensions when we flew from Stansted with them last year. Our hand luggage suitcase was taken from us and put in the hold at check in. We chanced a rucksack and it was fine.

Thank you all. I’ve spoken to the guy in charge and he seems to think that the little suitcase we have which is less than the 554020 should be fine. He’s flown budget airlines a lot and seems to know what he’s doing. If they do put it in the hold they’ll just have to wait at the end to collect it.

Thanks again

You can still pay for priority boarding and keep your larger bag, simply update your booking.
Last time I flew with them I noticed that the soft holdalls and rucksacks of the larger size were not taken off people, only hard cases.

Argh so we’re now packing her little suitcase and we got a food bag to put her liquids into, then I thought I’d check the website just to see what it said. It says it has to be a sealable clear bag 20*20 cms, my food bags are bigger than that, and that you’re only allowed one! I don’t think all her toiletries will fit in just one tiny plastic bag. It’s not even as if she has that many toiletries to take just bare minumimum and they are all travel size.
Will she be able to split them between 2 bags? Has anyone else done this?

You can only take a single clear bag of liquids - all must be 100mls or less. You can’t split the bags. Half fill your bag and she can put into one of theirs at the airport if needed. This includes lip balms etc.. all liquids, gel, cream, pastes

Linnet · 25/07/2018 21:42

So do they supply these 20*20 bags in the airport? It’s been so long since we’ve been on a plane. When we last flew you could get a clear bag at the airport but I don’t remember them being very small.

Yes you can buy them at any airport before security.

Starisnotanumber · 26/07/2018 10:36

Manchester hand bags out for free now. Remember says can buy stuff from boots on airside. If she's going with a group maybe they could buy something to share like shower stuff or shampoo with her roommates so she can use her little bag for things she needs for herself.
