Amsterdam, any recommendations on where to stay? Central.

I am taking my daughter to Amsterdam for three days during the August holiday.

I am looking at air B and B, but wondered if anyone had any recommendations of where to stay, or a favourite place. I would like to be central so we can walk to the museums etc.

Any other tips for Amsterdam with a 12 year old welcome.

When I stayed in Amsterdam, myself and my DH stayed at the Avenue hotel. I found the location great! Not too far from Central station or Dam Square. We walked to all attractions from the hotel, we actually found when we got to the Anne Frank museum we'd walked the long way round.

We didn't get chance to visit the other museums and art galleries as we were only there for 2 days but the hotel we found was great! Hope that might help some what.

Currently in Amsterdam. Staying at the Ibis Central Station. Breakfast a bit pricy but we just nip down to the Starbucks in the Station. 15 mins walk to Nemo Science museum, you can get the tram 2 to Rijksmuseum or 9 or 14 to the Zoo, Jewish quarter, Hermitage etc. Public transport very easy here.

Just to let you know that the Museum Kasey is now only for 5 museum visits in 31 days not unlimited as before. If you're only staying a few days it's probably not worth it. We went to 11 museums - knackered but great city. And Frank house currently online tickets and timed entry as is Van Gogh museum.

Anne Frank Museum, I mean.

MsForestier · 16/07/2018 18:15

Oh sorry, autocorrect again. I meant the Museumkaart.

Thank you mrs forestier took your advice and booked Anne Frank tickets, will probably do the same for Van Gogh museum.

Did you go to the memo science museum?

Can I ask you, do you buy a daily ticket to us on trams etc.

Yes, we bought daily tickets from the transport ticket office across from Central Station as that's where it seemed to be possible to buy child daily tickets. Euro 3.75 for kids daily ticket and you can get daily or multiple day tickets for adults euro 7.95 ish for one day, 12.95 ish for two day etc.

The iAmsterdam card has travel and museum entry combined. Museumkaart is just museum entry.

Nemo is amazing - we went twice! I think it's the best children's science museum that I've been too. Lovely walk from central station by the river.

The Van Gogh museum was very busy indeed and in the end the Hermitage was the surprise standout for us - excellent Canova exhibition with the Three Graces at the centre of it and the main exhibit about Dutch paintings in the Golden age which was innovatively presented. The Zoo was great too. While we didn't get to go inside Anne Frank's house, we went to the Jewish Museum instead near the Portuguese Synagogue. Lovely city. Enjoy the pancakes!

We stayed in an air b n b that was a canal boat - very reasonable and breakfast was brought each day, a lovely experience. I think it was called Little Amstel. We didn't bother with buses or public transport other than getting a train from the airport as it is a fairly small city and lovely to walk round
