We want to plan a trip to America, somewhere that's not the Florida or Las Vegas type holiday. We were thinking of Maryland

Can anyone point me in the direction of a forum or anything for tips or if anyone has done this holiday before can you give me any hints?

A lot depends on what you're looking for and what time of year you're going. Anywhere in New England is lovely in the autumn.

Another vote for New England. I have been to the US 4 times and California and New England were the best. We have also visited the Deep South and Florida, but the first 2 destinations beat them by miles.

Next time I go I want to visit some of the National Parks - Yellowstone and other parks in the middle. We have been to Yosemite and Death Valley already.

we are looking for a holiday with plenty to do by not the madness of the overly tourist areas if that makes sense.

thanks for the New england tip, i'll look into that

If you're looking for an active, outdoor holiday, hiking, biking, kayaking etc then New England is a good call. I'm very fond of Maine. Portland and around the lakes, Naples. Old Orchard beach, Bar Harbour and Acacia National Park. Boston is great too.

There are loads of places to go in New England - coastal Maine, Boston, Philadelphia, just to start off the list.

We are off to Boston and Cape Cod this year- it’s very family friendly. Vermont is gorgeous if you want to be off the beaten track.

hunanparaquet I love Maine too, especially the beaches 🙂

We went to New England for our honeymoon - it was wonderful

I’d like to go to Oregon & Seattle next.

Maryland is just so close to Washington DC and Virginia that it would be a shame not to do all 3. Maryland itself does not have much in terms of obvious tourist attractions - Annapolis is nice and the Ocean is also nice, but very crowded in the summer. Virginia is much more interesting with Arlington (including Robert E Lee's House), Mount Vernon, Monticello, Williamsburg, Appomattox, as well as the lovely beaches, caves, scenic forests and towns.

Just chucking in a vote for Colorado. We did an epic road trip there last year.

Watching with interest as I’d love to do some of these but it’s a bit tricky with a 1 year old in tow. We’re also looking at New England in the fall as that’s probably the most realistic for now.

I think the Maryland/DC/Virginia trip is a great idea with DC. FYI the Smithsonian museums in DC are all free, and have lots of interest to everyone.

I agree. Maryland is a great choice. I can spend ages in the Smithsonian and VA has loads to see. Mominatrix has nailed it with the best of the sights and I highly reccommend an Annapolis trip. Also the National Harbour, Goodard space center, Frederick and Bethesda. Don't miss the wineries all over VA.

There is also George Washington’s House, Mount Vernon, in Virginia and the Blue Ridge Mountains. Washington is easy to navigate as it has an excellent subway. It has wonderful museums. The American History one is outstanding and so is the Flight Museum. The memorials to presidents and wars are impressive as well as Arlington cemetery.

If you like history, doing a Civil War historic site holiday might be worth looking at.
