Anyone been to Turkey recently?

Hello
I am looking at taking my dc abroad and it looks like Turkey is coming up as one of the cheapest destinations.
I will be travelling as a single parent with a 12 and 9 year old. Ideally we would stay somewhere AI, is it safe to walk around alone...I am more used to Costa Del Sol which is more like Britain in the heat!!
I have never been to Turkey and don't really know anything about the country (apart from a friend who went 20 years ago and said you had to put toilet roll in the bin not down the toilet....is this still true?)
Any advice would be most welcome thank you

I came back last week from Istanbul, fantastic place and never felt unsafe.

cptartapp · 16/07/2018 16:44

Turkey was surprisingly beautiful. We've stayed in Kusadasi and loved it so much returned for the first time ever, to the same place twice.

Stayed at an amazing resort just outside of Bodrum in late May for 10 days - really was something else. Food was amazing, beach and scenery was wonderful, people were great and history/culture was really interesting.

skippy67 · 16/07/2018 21:14

Whereabouts did you stay cuppa?

Pinkmexicanskull · 16/07/2018 21:18

Can anyone suggest any 5* AI resorts in turkey?

skippy67 · 18/07/2018 07:19

Belek in Anatalya.

I've been to Dalyan which was close to Marmaris. It is slightly inland but you can get a boat down the river to a lovely beach. There is small turtles in the river which you can go on a tour to see. It was a busy resort but didn't feel crowded. Really lovely and I would go back tomorrow if I could! I've also been to Bodrum which I would avoid!! It was horrible and I felt very unsafe.

MissHemsworth · 23/07/2018 22:37

We're going for the 1st time in 4 weeks, can't wait. Everyone who has been has loved it when we've asked them about it.

Quick question for PPs, did you all get vaccinated? We're being told we need tetanus, typhoid & Hep A.

SelenaMeyer2016 · 29/07/2018 23:45

May 17 to Dalyan and luckily returning next week and none of us can wait!

I first holidayed in Turkey in 1999 and since then have been back regularly to various places. Olu is lovely and think there is an AI, Marmaris is very busy but had the best Turkish Bath experience there, Icmeler is small but lively. Bodrum and Antalya my least favourite but still nice. Fethiye is lovely but I have never stayed there.

I feel safe there but, as with the way of the world at the moment, as safe as I feel on my daily commute from Zone to Zone 1 on London.

It’s very good value, stunning scenery, the people are lovely, lots of culture and history (if you like that - we do!) and the food is amazing.

Highly recommend. Agree with the previous poster who gets irritated by people slating Turkey when they haven’t ever been...

Gushpanka · 29/07/2018 23:51

I love Turkey. Hate the regime there but I'm not going to punish the people there for it.
We're not in to resorts and there's tons to do if that's not your thing. History, nature, culture - you name it, Turkey has it. Highly recommend the north east, it's stunning. Food is fabulous throughout and people generally welcoming and helpful.
I never felt unsafe or threatened other than pushy salesmen in some of the tourist traps.

ilovebrie8 · 11/08/2018 12:50

I have been many many times and love it, the food is fantastic, people are so friendly and hospitable and stunning scenery. Never ever felt unsafe. I live in London and that is way more volatile...can't wait to go again. Go, you won't regret it...I agree people slate it that have never set foot in the country. Let us know where you decide to go to! Enjoy.

Kenworthington · 11/08/2018 13:06

I’d recommend Tui sensatori in fetiyhe, only 49 mins transfer from dalaman airport. It’s a 5* all inclusive. And absolutely lovely. Have been twice now

Iamclearlyamug · 13/08/2018 13:15

I go to Turkey 5 times a year, across every season. These days I go to spend time with my partner who is a Turk but previously to that I travelled there alone and NEVER had a problem with men leering at me, or certainly no worse than it is in England. I'm mid-twenties and average in terms of attractiveness.

It's an incredibly beautiful country, Turks are friendly and helpful, it's very very cheap at the best of times, even more so at the moment as the value of the lira has plummeted. Feel free to ask if there's anything i can help with :) but I promise you'd never regret visiting

Iamclearlyamug · 13/08/2018 13:16

oh and kenworthington's recommendation is a great one, it's only a few miles from where I go and I actually have a friend who works there :)

ilovebrie8 · 15/08/2018 10:15

Hi OP, did you book anywhere in Turkey?

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 24/08/2018 18:30

We just got back,
Bits of it are bleak, there's a load of building work going on. (Hotels, flats)
Lots of what looks like scrubby waste ground between .

Dogs , just loitering about , lie on pavements ......but they all seemed quite well covered and most had tags in their ears (I'm hoping that means they were owned ) . Water bowls dotted around for them.

Tiny bit of hassel in the markets but if you just say "No thank you" they leave you too it.

I was worried , my DD is 16yo, tall, very slim and ( not boasting much) very attractive . She did get a bit of attention but it wasn't rude or lectchy at all. She got more letch at the airport going out .

So, we felt safe , but I did get the feeling they were quite sexist , no big deal , I got ignored at the bar, DH got attention straight away . In the shops and markets , directing anything to do with money at DH not me.

I would love to go again ( we have been twice before but that was nearly 20 years ago)
