Hello! My baby girl has an Australian daddy. We have just applied for citizenship by descent online before applying for a passport. Processing time is 3 months!!! Anyone had this done sooner than that?! We really need a passport.

Despite having an EU passport?

Maybe this is part of the crackdown then Sad

I got DD an Aus passport last year. As PP said it's a fair wait for the citizenship letter (the full allowed time); then I immediately did the paperwork for the passport and called for an appointment; it was about another Month into The future. Once interview completed it only took a week.

If dad has been permanently resident in the UK for 5 years before your child's birth she might be entitled to a British passport.
This applies to EU nationals so might apply as he is a Portuguese citizen.
When did dad come to the UK?

@cakeandteajustforme it seems some people get it in 3 weeks and some in 3 months... did you wait 3 months? Did you submit all the right documents? When it was approved did they say they're issuing your certificate or did you just find it in the post one day?

Sorry can't exactly remember but it was so long I'd forgotten about it... so probably at least 10 weeks. Just turned up in the post one day.

Same here.. We had all the correct forms etc and certificate arrived about 3 months later. Are you a British citizen? If so why don't you just get your dd her British passport now so you can travel and then do the Australian one after?

I didn't get notified either. It showed up in the post after 3 weeks. I only did the application last month so my experience is very recent.

My children's Citizenship by Descent certificates arrived really quickly - less than a month I think (this was 5 or so years ago though). And passports not too long but your DH has to make the appointment at Australia House and there was a bit of a wait for that (he recently renewed DC Aussie passports). All in all there's no telling - you just have to wait.

@KeepingTheWormsQuiet they told me when I called the citizenship queries line that you are meant to get email updates like "submitted" "under review" and "finalized"! So frustrating. Some woman on my ward told me the whole thing can be expedited if you're in the UK by sending the birth certificate to Canberra but apparently that's not true according to the telephone help line. FFS!
