Just Friday to Sunday in September. Not more than 2.5 hours on the plane. I'm thinking Copenhagen or somewhere in Norway or Switzerland or something. Been to Berlin, Barcelona, Paris so none of those.

We would like not too much travel time so also from airport and not hugely expensive. Just a nice city where we can spend some time together for the first time in years!

Any ideas?

Gothenburg
Florence
Bruges (you can go on the Eurostar and change in Brussels)

Go to Copenhagen. You won’t be disappointed.
Or Valencia.

Copenhagen, loveliest place I’ve ever been.

starzig · 01/07/2018 21:19

Ljubljana and Bratislava are small enough to do in a weekend

Hoppinggreen · 02/07/2018 10:01

Nuremberg is great, nice size for a weekend and only a short flight

Inneedofglasses · 02/07/2018 10:07

Stockholm is just lovely.

Budapest is awesome - especially if you’re looking for a romantic destination on a budget

I’ve been 4 times and love it!

Helsinki is lovely. Fantastic art nouveau architecture everywhere, great tram system, the rock church, the Alvar Aalto house, a visit to Suomenlinna. The Baltic winding its way into inlets throughout the city. I loved it.

Rome, Venice, Krakow. Another city we loved was Carcasonne - Perpignan was also lovely - much better than we expected when we ended up staying then en route to holiday accommodation one year thanks to flight changes.

We had a lovely time in Milan last year.

brassbrass · 03/07/2018 22:04

Amsterdam you could do by train too so would cut out the whole airport transfer / security time

Sillybilly1234 · 03/07/2018 22:05

Bruges definitely.

brassbrass · 03/07/2018 22:07

Places like Rome, Budapest deserve a slightly longer trip as so much to do.

Girona in Spain is cheap and compact . You can do a day trip from there to Barcelona or perpinghon . Copenhagen is lovely but expensive. If I went back I would stay in Malmo and take the train to Copenhagen over “ the bridge”
Palma is lovely too

Loopy9 · 03/07/2018 22:52

Just come back from Palma, just stunning. Definitely one of my best weekend trips. Culture, wonderful cathedral & old town, great food, marina, amazing bike ride out along the sea front, good wine and great weather.

Amsterdam is fab, we are off there again in a few weeks, though we're driving this time instead of flying.

We liked Carcassonne but we went at the absolute start of the season and I'm not sure I'd fancy it much in peak season - both in terms of numbers and heat. There's not a huge amount going on, either, but that might be right up your street.

We did the Basel Christmas markets and enjoyed our trip. It's a beautiful city, but it's very expensive for eating out. We had a great time but feel like we saw all we would want to see so wouldn't look at it for a return trip, unlike Amsterdam. We also wouldn't rush back to Carcassonne, again, because we feel like we've 'done' it.
