Just wondering how strict they are with the new baggage policy ie if you don't pay extra it has to go in the hold. I don't have a big wheely just a squishy backpack. Planning to chance it.

I flew to Belfast last month from Stansted - they checked everyone.
You can take one bag onif you haven't paid extra, but it can't be bigger than 35cm x 20cm x 20cm.

WinkysTeatowel · 28/06/2018 15:32

Yep, same here. They walk down the queue and tag everyone who hasn't paid to take their bags in the cabin.

LoniceraJaponica · 28/06/2018 15:48

DD landed from a ryanair flight an hour ago. Yes, they are strict.

Bombardier25966 · 28/06/2018 15:57

I always get away with a backpack, even a large one. I'm generally last in the queue so maybe they've gauged whether there's enough room by that point.

Having said that, I'd assume it will be going in the hold, then if it doesn't it's a bonus.

cowfacemonkey · 28/06/2018 16:00

If it can fit under the seat in front you will be ok but if not it will go in the hold. You could try going at the end of the line to see if they have taken enough by then. Personally I love the new policy and always used to volunteer my case for the hold!

SJane45S · 28/06/2018 16:03

Yes - as above, flew at Easter from Stanstead and ours went into hold an you can only take on a pretty small handbag and a bag of duty free. You can upgrade obviously to take your backpack on board but if you're going to be landing at a small airport (and most Ryanair flights are into them) then you're probably not going to have to wait very long at baggage claim. Ours was all on the belt going round by the time we exited passport control. Do check in online at least 2 hours before the flight otherwise there's a fine - it's all really draconian and I avoid them as much as possible but they do fly into places other airlines just don't!

LoniceraJaponica · 28/06/2018 16:08

I didn't know about the fine for checking in late.

Notquiteagandt · 28/06/2018 16:12

Its 6 quid for the reassurance you can take it onboard.

Ive flown 3 or 4 times with them since new rules. Theyve been pretty strict. 2 diff ques for priority and non priority and bag tags on bags of those not.

I saw people in prority que with cases ,handbags and laptop bags who got asked to make it down too 2 bags.

I paid £11 return to milan (I know right!) & £12 return priority boarding. Cost more than the flight!!

A backpack that fits under the seat is fine. I do it all the time.

SJane45S · 28/06/2018 16:47

Would have to be a really small backpack though to fit the 35cm x 20cm x 20cm guidelines - measured all my DD’s up before Easter & they were all too big

SJane45S · 28/06/2018 16:53

And yes, if you check their site, online check in is free up to 2 hours before the flight - otherwise it’s a stonking £55 each. On the plus side, unlike many other airlines you can check in way in advance

SJane45S · 28/06/2018 16:59

Agree re reassurance if you’re flying into a big airport like Milan but if you’re flying into a place that’s likely to be one runway and a tiny airport building then for a family of 4, just save yourself £48 & stick in hold! They took our bags off us on the runway at Stansted & at the gate going back the other way so you don’t need to check them in at a desk (she says assuming it’s going to be the same at other airports!)

SweepTheHalls · 28/06/2018 17:05

But remember that you have to carry to the gate, so all the hand luggage regulations apply which we didn't!

Frazzled2207 · 28/06/2018 17:42

Thanks everyone. Shall expect to have it taken away then and be pleasantly surprised if not. I do have a smaller bag with my essentials to whip out if needed.
Flying to a small airport so not worried about waiting ages though waiting at Manchester on the return could be tedious.
Thanks for the warning - have boarding pass all printed off.

I am loving the new rule. I have flown with Ryan air twice a month since January. You carry your bag to the plane and then the handlers put it in the cart so it's unlikely to be forgotten.
A big advantage is that you are ' hands free' for the flight. You can take a small bag with your iPad and wallet if you want. I always make sure I have passport, phone, wallet and keys on me. This is much better than before where if you were one of the last on and your seat, for example, was near the front and all the overhead space was used up your bag may end up at a cabin locker near the back.

It's a lot quicker getting in and off the plane now that most of the luggage is gong in the hold.
The carousel is pretty quick. The airlines want their planes to do a quick turnaround so there isn't much hanging around.

Don't do what one lady last weekend tried to do to beat the system. She wasn't happy that her bag had to go in the hold. She hadn't paid for priority. Her bag was tagged and she was given a sticker. A short while later when she thought no one was looking she took the tag off. She went on the plane but they ask to see your boarding pass. It clearly says that you are non priority and her case got took from her by the cabin crew.

notacooldad · 29/06/2018 10:53

Frazzled
Meant to add you don't need to print your boarding pass off. Once I've checked everyone in I screenshot their pass and send it across to them on messenger or in messages ( or whatever platform you use, e.g. what's app)much less faff.

I use Manchester, Leeds andLiverpool airports and they are all General pretty quick at getting your luggage out on to the carousel.

Frazzled2207 · 29/06/2018 12:32

Update, well we got away with it, and husband's rucksack rather bigger than mine.
The new system appears to be working though, much less of a fight for space on board. They seemed to be targeting wheely cases only for the hold and that meant a good few dozen less trying to fit into the cabin.

OP posts:
notacooldad · 30/06/2018 08:39

You are right about them targeting the hard cases.

I flew to the Netherlands a couple of months ago with my friend. Nearlyall the cases were getting taggedexcept mine didn't which was a soft sportsbag. I asked if mine could go in the hold and the staff wasn't keen but then said it might as well seeing that my friend's bag was going in.

It made things a little easier! I love the bag in hold rule!

LoniceraJaponica · 30/06/2018 09:27

OH used to fly with Ryanair on a frequent basis. He said that the wheelie cabin bags were a PITA when everyone brought them into the cabin as there was never enough room for them. The current way of doing it is a much more practical option. It is much easier to squish a soft bag into the overhead lockers than a hard wheelie case.
