You'll be fine getting about on your own and public transport is OK.
Buses are €2 per journey regardless of how far your going and last for two hours so you can jump on and off and use the same ticket. They also have two different cards you can buy a €15 or €21 both of which are good value. Buses on the main routes can get really really busy and some will just go straight past if they're full, which happens often!
Where you stay depends on what kind of holiday you're after. North is the usual holiday place, probably has the best beaches which get really busy. South is very quite, sleepy fishing villages, nice for a day trip but a bit boring for a week. West I wouldn't bother with. East is Valletta, Selima & St Julians. Most populated area of the island but good transport links to almost everywhere. Valletta being the capital is expensive but Selima is cheaper and only a quick bus ride or 5min ferry to Valletta. You can also walk all the way up the seafront to St Julians from there which is full of restaurants pubs and clubs.
I lived there for a while so if you have anymore questions feel free to ask.

Oh that’s fantastic, thank you!

I’m looking at a four night break and prefer peace and quiet. I’m 50 so no clubs for me! Grin

Id like somewhere thats got great sea views and a beach too but not so quiet tgat I’ll stand out on my iwn if you see what I mean.

How lovely to have lived there. I bet you miss the sun!

You'll be fine on your own. You won't stand out and it's one of the safest place you can go.

If you want a beach and are staying on Malta, the best one is probably Mellieha Bay, in the north of the island. This is quite a nice area with a few bars and restaurants and the beach.

Valleta is also a great place to wander around. It does take quite a while on the buses so I don't know if you want to think about staying for a couple of nights in Valleta and a couple in somewhere like Mellieha Bay?

You should also think about taking the ferry over to Gozo (vey easy - about 5 euros return as a foot passenger, no need to book, just turn up and get on), at that's also a really lovely place, especially if you like quiet/laid back, churches, walking etc. The best beach there is Ramla Bay, on the north coast. Marsalforn is a lovely small resort with a small beach, waterside restaurants and a short bus or taxi ride to Victoria, the main town, which has an old citadel and narrow streets to wander round.

We spent a couple of days in Silema (which wasn't horrible just very very built up and with a lot of modern buildings) - Valleta was a lot nicer and has a great deal of history and I'd second spending a couple of days there. We then stayed at Ramla Bay in the North at a resort hotel which was lovely although we felt a bit remote and the sea was full of jellyfish. There is a good bus network and is probably the best way to get around - the buses were in good shape and tended to be on time. Mdina was my favourite place (the old capital city - a walled medieval town) but there are very few hotels and no beach there. I liked Malta personally and feel it gets a bad rep from some people but some of the places we went through I'm pretty glad we didn't stay in as there are quite a few ugly seaside towns catering for an older tourist trade . I didn't like Mellieha much as a town but only used it for shopping so probably didn't see it's best side! Would also recommend the Gozo trip. All in , good place and I'd go back! Do expect to spend quite a bit of time on buses though.

If you want quiet go to Gozo! Malta is very densely populated. Less tourists staying in or near valetta, but likely to be some cruise ship passengers (but nowhere near as many as there are in Dubrovnik, for example).

Travel around on buses and boats.

The three cities and Valletta are must sees. Such a beautiful place, but it is busy and there are not really any beaches

When I was about 13 we went there on holiday and I will never for get a trip to swim in amazing clear blue waters in a sort of natural lagoon on Comino which is (I think?) between Malta and Gozo. Absolutely stunning, blew me away. And a church in Gozo full of wax mounds of body parts that had been cured after praying there- wax ears, knees, feet etc. There was also an tourist film played in the information centre in Valletta featuring a song with the chorus “Malta, Malta, there’s nothing we would alter” Grin That’s probably gone now!

Moulds not mounds.
