Travelling with grandchild under residence order

I’m posting on behalf of my mother in law really. In October she is coming to Tenerife with me and my husband, and also her grandson (our nephew) who has a residence order to live with her.

He will be 8 at the time, his mum has been in and out of his life but not seen him at all for 2 years, and the residence order has been in place since he was only a few months old. His father hasn’t had anything to do with him at all but is named on the birth certificate and unfortunately his passport application has had to go in with his father’s surname, despite the fact that he is known by his grandparent’s surname.

My question is, what documention will my mother in law need to be carrying to make sure there are no problems flying with him, with him having a different surname to the rest of us? Is it enough to take the residence order documents? We think so but it’s so hard to find the information to confirm, or even know who to ask!

Yes take his residency order documents and maybe a letter from his father stating son can go with them what a carry on for them all they want to do is go on holiday .

They don’t know where his father is. The one thing we do know is that the person with the residence order doesn’t need permission from anyone else with Parental Responsibility (eg mother and father) to take a child abroad for up to 28 days, so don’t think we’ll need a letter.

Thanks though! All the questions about this holiday have convinced her that after we get back, it’s time to look into adopting him so that none of this is a problem in future!
