Carry on only to Amazon, Machu Pichu and Galapagos

We are going on Wednesday, family of 6 for 3 weeks to Amazon, Machu Pichu and Galapagos
I had planned we would each only take carry on. We are moving around so much ch of a checked in bag goes missing for a few days it would make things difficult.

I have started packing and it is way more challenging than I expected.

Have to have long sleeved, trousers and closed toes for Amazon.

Layers for Machu Pichu and Cuzco as it can be warm in day and cold at night. Shoes for walking in.

Shorts and water sandals for wet landing in
the Galapagos

Quite a few medicines recommended for taking kids to the various regions.

Bug spray and sunscreen are. Taking up a fair bit of the liquids.?

Anyone have a handy, shirt packing list?

Just book a hold bag, sounds like that would make things much easier!

We have had a few experiences recently where one or more checked bags didn't arrive at our destination when we did and it took a few days to get them.
We are travelling so much it would be difficult to get a bag to us quickly if it got delayed.
If we can manage carry on we will.with maybe a checked in bag of nice of have but non essentials

Sorry but I agree. you need a checked in bag for that amount of travelling. a rucksack would be a good idea as you can stuff plenty in it. there might be limited opportunities for washing out your own clothes - we found this when we travelled to Belize and I am glad for once that I overpacked.

You need one hold bag for that amount of travelling about and liquids over 100ml will need to be put in as hold luggage. Simply having carry on for that length of time too is not practical nor advisable.

Wear the walking/close toed shoes and long trousers/long sleeves on the flight along with a jumper and coat on the flight. They don’t count and you can digest yourself of the outer layers when you get on. Buy sunscreen and bug spray at the airport. Carry in a plastic bag. If you need to bin and rebuy a few times on your trip because of restrictions on liquid so be it. On top of that pack socks inside wet shoes. Take a few days clothing only - shorts tshirts and thin fleece style jumper should pack up quite small. Use packing cubes as they help compress things a little bit but not to the point where everything gets wrinkled to death.

How much carry on do you get? Are you in economy with one tiny bag or are you allowed a carry on and a laptop/handbag size?
This should be doable if you can do a little laundry in the second week. Make sure everyone wears their walking books so you only have to pack little shoes.
4 pairs of pants/socks per person.
swimmers
2 x amazon long sleeved/legged stuff.
2x shorts and tee
1x swim shoes
2 x fleece
Something to sleep in.
small bag of washing powder.
sunhat, sunglasses
toiletries/bug spray/sun cream etc.

Crikey, I struggled with hand luggage for 3 days in Amsterdam - can't imagine 3 weeks in South America! Not helpful. Sorry

WickedGoodDoge · 18/06/2018 18:32

Will you have easy access to clothes washing facilities after the first and second weeks? DS went to Panama a few years ago with a week’s worth of clothes etc in a suitcase suitable as a carry on (though he did check it both ways). I’d get rucksacks as large as you can for carry on and pack a week’s worth of clothes, wearing as many layers as you can when flying.

Thanks everyone.

We will have access to laundry on two occasions but not at all for last 8 days.

I have looked at the hand luggage restrictions on the flights within South America and the are quite tight.

Realistically I think we will each take most stuff in a carry in bag but check one bag for extra liquids and some extra clothes and shoes. We can put the stuff that will not be used until near the end in the checked bag for the first few flights and then the stuff that we won't need again in the checked bag near the end.

I need particular sunscreen for two of the children who react very badly to most sunscreen and bringing enough of that in hand luggage would be a challenge. And then the 15 year old apparently can't travel without fake tan!
