Hi, we've booked to holiday in Canada with one 12 year old , I'm looking for advice on what we should pack clothes wise and is it worth taking our own toiletries Shampoo etc , are these sort of things expensive there?

We found Canada to be reasonably priced and I never travel with any toiletries as you can always pick them up at the supermarket. I did take jungle formula bug spray with 50% deet as I know this can be difficult to buy abroad. In terms of clothes we packed a sort of GB holiday mixture with a rainmac and long trousers just in case but plenty of shorts, tees and layers.

What time of year are you going and which part of Canada are you going to?

One thing to watch out for there is that sales tax is often added at the till, so the price you see on the shelf/label is less than the price you end up paying.

What part of the country, what time of the year, and in the city or in the country?
All of these have a big impact on what you need

Depends how much room you have in your luggage too and why brand of toiletries you need. A $10 bottle of shampoo (average brand) would be around £5. All Canadian prices have taxes added and there's more than in Vancouver and Toronto than Jasper and Banff (different provinces).

Were about to leave for Canada. We always travel light and just get hotels to wash clothes. I would take a couple of warmer tops and even a jacket depending what you are planning on doing as even in a summer places like Banff can be chilly. The last thing I’d worry about is toiletries- you’ll pay more in extra baggage than it would cost to buy there!

I am in Vancouver at the moment having been to Banff and the Rockies and Vancouver Island over the last few weeks.

Buy bug spray in Canada - it’s formulated for the local bugs. You will definitely need it especially if you go up Grouse Mountain in Vancouver or hiking around Banff. Things are not cheap here, slightly more expensive than the uk. I’ve relied on hotel shampoo and conditioner and it’s been fine.

Excursions wise I guess you will do pretty much the same as us so pack layers.

We needed woolly hats and warm coats and sturdy shoes for the ice fields and the mountains in Banff. It was snowing on top of Sulphur mountain when we were up there.

However Vancouver’s having a heatwave this week so we’ve been in shorts and t-shirts. It’s very casual here.

It rains a lot too apparently but we’ve been lucky.

Jasper and Banff are amazing. Probably the most beautiful places I’ve ever been. We’re already planning to come back.

Don’t miss Lake Minnewanka if you have time, it was our favourite.

They are very casual dress wise in Canada and a lot of the attractions are outdoors so I'd pack comfortably walking trainers and layered clothing

Re toiletries just get the mini sized ones from Superdrug- cheap, small and saves trekking to shops for boring items once you're there.

Have a great time. love Canada.
