Is there anything that repels bedbugs away from luggage?

I'm going on a holiday later in the summer. I'm dreading the thought of bedbugs. Is there anything that repels bed bugs from luggage. I googled and so far the stuff, I read online in other forums, many people confuse repelling with killing.

I read online, a hard shell case is the best. I have a luggage case already but unfortunately its a soft/fabric one. Would there be anything I can use to spray on the case to repel bedbugs so that if there's any bedbugs, there will be less likely to Bury in my luggage. Like the mosiquito spray - Deet, or maybe lavender oil or whatever.

Where are you staying that's so grim you fear bedbugs will make their way into your suitcase and all the way home? Confused
And why is it the case you're worried about rather than being munched on every night?!

Putting your luggage on top of the wardrobe helps. The blighters live in the carpets so minimising the time your luggage is in contact is key

Yes, apparently DEET has some effect.

Wolfiefan, some places that people like to travel to have bedbug problems. Wouldn't it be a shame to avoid them just for that? Where's your sense of adventure Hmm? And yes - carrying them home is far more of a concern than merely getting bitten by them. Once they are in your home you have a serious problem, not just a few itchy bites!

Avoid putting your suitcase on the floor, bed or chairs. Keep the suitcase elevated until you've had a chance to inspect the room, maybe on a dresser or on a shelf in the closet.

I read that you should not place case on the bed or on the luggage rack. The magazine suggested that you lay the bag on a tiled floor to unpack and to store case on tiled area if possible or else to place case in large plastic bag and put on top of wardrobe ( although in some hotels your run the risk of it being thrown out!)

I always dread this when I go to New York given that I believe that they can be a problem there. However, I haven't ever seen any or bought them home Grin.

Good advice from others and I will be following that myself next time.

Going on a cruise. I read reviews online about the company and the ship I will be on, and there's nothing about bed bugs. However I do want to take preventative measures. If I get bitten on board, it would be disappointing. I will be bring a first aid kit with supplies like hydrocortisone cream, antihistamine etc. My biggest fear and worry is taking them home. Hopefully I won't encounter bedbugs but I'd like to take preventative measures too.

Thanks for the tips. I'll bring a large bin bag in the front pocket and maybe even a sticker a pen for labelling. I will unpack straight away when I get into my cabin and store the case in a bin bag.

they are everywhere, even in posh places.

if worried, treat luggage and hotwash clothes on your return. take as little as possible.

Travelled all over for over 40 years. Never had them. Never heard of anyone who has either. Confused
Surely if a cabin had an issue there would be a complaint and it would be sorted before you got in.
Dreading the thought sounds rather dramatic.

I brought home a cockroach one year - it hid in the usb port of my laptop and jumped out when we were sitting on the sofa at home! DH flung it (and the trousers he was wearing!) outside. We ended up paying Rentokil to come and set traps - it wasn't cheap but I couldn't face an infestation. We never saw any more though thankfully!

Hi,

Try Permethrin spray. Used to repel all sorts of insects and safe to use too. A favourite of those walking the Camino de Santiago to repel bed bugs!
