Cancelling holiday

Hi,

We were due to go away on the 19th of June to the holiday village in turkey with first choice.

This weekend however our youngest DD whose 4 has broken her leg and is in a cast up to her thigh and can't walk or move. We are due to have an phone call with the fracture clinic on Wednesday (and hopefully an actual appointment soon after), but obviously we feel it's best to cancel the holiday.

I've never had to cancel one before, and this is only the 3rd holiday I've ever had, so have no idea where to start with this! I've got travel insurance, so do I ring them before or after cancelling. I'm guessing I have to put a claim in like with car insurance? What will count as proof?

Thanks, and sorry for the stupid questions! My brain feels like treacle atm with lack of sleep and worry!

what a shame! I very much doubt she can fly like that anyway.

yes, call the insurers and they will tell you what needs doing, the first thing after that will be to cancel with the tour operator.

this is why insurance must be bought when booking so glad you did.

StarDustMonkey · 11/06/2018 12:16

Thank you. We've spoken to insurance who have said that we need to wait until we've seen the fracture clinic and hear what they have to say.

Very glad we have the insurance though! Now just got to wait and see...

Hi I work for travel insurance please cancel before you ring ask for a cancellation letter have that all handy with doctors letters saying that don’t recommend him to fly otherwise you will have to ring back with it after calling them

Tenko · 11/06/2018 16:56

Understandably you wouldn't want to go on holiday with a child in a pot but they may say she is fit to fly. You may need to make clear to the doctor that you don't want to travel and ask nicely for them to write you a letter.

StarDustMonkey · 12/06/2018 10:13

Thank you all for replying. Just waiting to speak to the fracture clinic tomorrow and will ask them nicely for a letter that she can't fly, as it would be a miserable trip!

Is a letter saying she is unfit to fly enough to claim back on our insurance? It states that we are covered for cancellation due to serious bodily injury. Will this count?

Also it says that we are covered for 'your proportion only'. Does this mean as we are a family they will pay for the whole holiday being cancelled, or only what they deem as my daughters part? Oh also will we be able to claim back for the parking and lounge we also booked?

Sorry for all the questions! I've copied in the wording of the relevant sections of our policy is it helps. We took it our with Spectrum Travel Insurance if anyone has any experience of them? Thank you all so much again

POLICY WORDING OF RELEVANT SECTIONS

claim and see what happens! you may be in for an argument, but clearly you cant leave a four year old at home, never mind one in a cast.

StarDustMonkey · 12/06/2018 16:14

Thanks, we will do. Hopefully it goes smoothly! Obviously we would not be leaving her at home and going without her, no matter what!

If you cancel the tour company may reimburse you a proportion depending on notice, although it may already be up to 100%. Check the booking terms and conditions. The insurer then covers the difference, less any excesses, assuming you can demonstrate that is the medical advice and it was not preexisting at the time the policy was taken out.
