Bit of advice here please ladies and gents.

MrsBeau is off to Madrid with work for a couple of days and we want to try and make a weekend of it after.

we have sorted the flights with me flying out separately a couple days later. the only thing i am having trouble with is trying to find a hotel is the right area. never been there before so not too sure on where location wise would be best to be able to get the most out of the break.

also what would be the best sites to see, not a fan of being in mad crowds so even hidden gems would be great. We went florence last year and managed to find a free walking tour which was very good. i'm sure we can find something like that there?

if anyone has been or can recommend somewhere that would be great, we would stop Sat - Tuesday in september, fly back late morning on the tuesday.

thanks in advance,

cheers

We loved the views from the rooftop terrace at theCírculo de Bellas Artesin C/ Alcalá. From this massive patio you can see the whole city. It's also an ideal spot to have a drink and watch the sun set.
The Reina Sofia modern art museum has pieces by Picasso, Dali, Joan Miro etc.. Entry is free after 7pm (after 2.30pm on Sundays).
San Gines serves up the most famous churros in Madrid. You might have to queue, but service is quick. Order a glass of water to wash is down with, it's sweet and rich!
For the best calamari sandwich, eat at El Brillante café, opposite Atocha station.
If you're into football, do a self-guided tour of the Real Madrid Stadium where you will see the dressing rooms and the press room, walk down the players’ tunnel and out on to the pitch, visit the Presidential Box, and have a look at the trophies up close. On match days, tours are only available until five hours before kick off. It is advisable to buy tickets online, but you can also get them from ticket office 10, which is by Gate seven at the entrance to Tower B on the Paseo de la Castellana.

The Royal Palace is nice to visit, the bullring stadium was very interesting to visit (didn't see a fight) but admittedly this is an acquired taste. Retiro Park is lovely for a few hours rest. Also visit the indoor markets, we use to visit for lunch and buy bits and pieces and share.

Retiro Park and museo Reina Sophia would be my recommendation
Don’t eat in the plaza major, it’s over priced and there’s better food elsewhere
