Last day in Portugal and we’ve loved it on paper weather not great as only been 19-21C but that’s fine with us as daughter skin so fair. We’ve never gone for this type of holiday in the six weeks hols as temps seen too high but is there anywhere in the world that we could still get lower temps in July/Aug but still be more of a beach holiday than a city break holiday

Swedish islands?

ceeveebee · 01/06/2018 08:45

Northern France? We always used to go to Normandy/Brittany area as a child and wasn’t particularly hot if I remember correctly!

Ricekrispie22 · 01/06/2018 13:34

The popular Vendee area in mid-France has an average temperature of 25C in July and August, so you'd be looking at anywhere north of there. Boulogne-sue-Mer is a nice seaside resort for kids very close to Calais. Deauville and Le Touquet are also top spots.

How old is your DD?

Maybe the highly thought of Duinrell holiday park in The Netherlands? Theme/ water park onsite, lovely beaches nearby. Weather is rather like UK.

Southern Germany? Lakeside holiday rather than beach one but some have 'beaches' at lakeside - could be lovely. Ditto many landlocked middle European countries.

North west coast of Spain. The wet, cool Atlantic side of Spain. Beautiful beaches, different climate to Mediterranean Spain.

Channel Islands/ Isles of Scilly? Lots of beaches. Will never get boiling.

Brittany or Normandy.

Much of middle Europe, including southern Germany speaking from experience, can be hot.

Teds77 · 03/06/2018 01:37

I'm the daughter of a red head so as children we always seemed to visit bits of Europe no one else did!

Normandy and Brittany are good. We managed Loire and Dordogne but I remember that being pretty hot! There are beaches in Belgium and he Netherlands and I remember a holiday that included beautiful beaches on the Dutch Frisian islands very fondly.

Denmark is a great holiday with beautiful beaches as well as loads of stuff to do. We have family in Sweden which is fab with kids but the only beaches we have done there were on the Baltic coast and the sea is pretty cold so might be worth doing a bit of research about good places for a swim! Last time we went in August it was bright sunshine and 23 degrees - perfect weather for me as you don't get hot and bothered.

I've only done inland northern Germany - Lubeck and Hamburg both great cities and I think there are city beaches on the lake in Hamburg. I really want to visit Rugen on the German Baltic coast - beaches look great!

There are some lovely place to holiday in Northern Europe in the summer. Brittany, Picardy, Normandy, the Netherlands. Ireland is gorgeous ( although 21 would be on a good day). Scandinavia is gorgeous.

I'd echo that Southern Germany can be very hot in summer. And I've known it over 30 in the Vendee. I remember standing in the frozen isle of a La Rochelle supermarket, not wanting to leave.

We love The Alps in the summer, and while it's hot down low ( our car recorded 42 in Evian last year), the mountains are cooler, fresh and glorious. Just be careful with burning though as the sun can be intense.

AintNobodyHereButUsKittens · 03/06/2018 09:25

Does she have problems with the heat or is it sunburn that’s the problem? If it’s heat then the Swiss or Austrian mountains with loads of suncream and hats might be lovely but they are definitely a sunburn risk.

Otherwise, to state the bleeding obvious, Pembrokeshire, North Norfolk or Northumbria.

Also I recommend a look at the website Climates To Travel, composed I think by a weather enthusiast. Gives a good idea of where's too hot versus where would be doable at the time you want to travel.

Scottish Hebrides.

Beautiful beaches. Low 20s. Plenty of sunshine.

All this beauty right on our own shores and yet so overlooked.

ItsLikeRainOnYourWeddingDay · 04/06/2018 17:37

Scottish hebridies! Haha the chance of getting 15 degrees on a summers day would be a fine thing. Don't talk nonsense. It might have reached 20c once in the last decade.

BunnyB001820 · 04/06/2018 20:31

Iceland, UK but there can be the odd hot spell.

BunnyB001820 · 04/06/2018 20:33

The Hebrides are beautiful. Perhaps tie visit in with a festival.

WhatsGoingOnEh · 04/06/2018 20:38

Scotland's a pretty safe bet. 😃

LoniceraJaponica · 04/06/2018 20:39

Northern Spain, The Azores, Madeira

Hermagsjesty · 04/06/2018 20:44

I’m a redhead with two very fair children so have the same problem! We did Stockholm last year and Copenhagen the year before, both of which were low 20s and great for a holiday with kids. We also did Bruges one year and are trying Nantes this year.

I live in Southern Germany. Today was 28. Apart from the odd day of rain it has been around 28 for the last month. Mid 30s is very common in July and not just for one or two days but a good part of the month.

FurryDogMother · 04/06/2018 20:52

The west coast of Ireland. Almost guaranteed not to be too hot or sunny! Lots of gorgeous mountains and coasts and things to do like horseriding, surfing, hill-walking, kayaking etc., plus the beaches are wonderful when it is actually sunny - and there are rock pools when it isn't. Good food, kid-friendly, English speaking, of course - and close to home so travel costs aren't too bad.

LallyB · 05/06/2018 08:52

Itslikerainonyourweddingday I was in the Hebrides last week... warm and beautiful. Same last summer when I was there. You won't get a great tan but you'll see a stunning part of the world with great history and culture.

reluctantbrit · 05/06/2018 14:57

We booked Lake Constanz (German side) one August, expected the usual high twenties and had rain and 17 degrees. This is a total exception of the rules.

Northern Germany is beautiful on the Baltic coast, lots of beaches but water is cold. You have the North Sea as well, more rural, more designed for walking, lovely in warm/nice Summer, can be a bit more miserable if weather is less good.

I spent most of my Summer holidays as a child at the Dutch/Belgium border in Zeeland, lovely countryside, lovely seaside, sea is same temperature as Kent/Sussex coast. Lots of towns to visit for a day trip and easy to reach by Eurostar if you are in the south.
