Frigiliana for a week- need hire car?

I’m going for a week in August, staying in the village; just me and DP.

Debating whether to hire a car or not. We will just be chilling and cooking/eating out, not mad for activities or sight seeing, but wondered if a car would make life easier or the reverse (parking)

I would get a car. Then you can shop for food easily. Go to the beach and the coastal towns etc

AlbusPercival · 21/05/2018 20:42

Yes you need a car, there’s not much there

We've been going to Nerja for years and have recently started staying in Frigiliana instead as we love the peace. I don't think you need a car but it depends what you want to do. The bus links in Nerja are great and it's only a euro from Frig to Nerja. But we are happy wandering round the beautiful village, tapas bar hopping and chilling on the balcony with the amazing views. There are also some really lovely walks around the area.

We stayed there, it was a lovely place but I would definitely recommend a car so that you can get to a beach, explore nerja etc.

I don’t want to go to beaches- making the most of having no dcs with me to entertain!

Wondered about it for food shopping or exploring in the unlikely event we get bored of reading/siestas/wandering the village

How are you getting there from the airport? It's sometimes the case that even if you only use the car to drive to and from the airport and perhaps one or two trips out, it's worth it cost wise.

Whether you need it for food shopping depends on what is available locally. If you are planning on eating out most of the time, you can probably manage with whatever is available in the village, even if it is limited stock and more expensive than big supermarkets. And there should be a market on at least one day while you are there, which will be good for fresh produce.

I can totally see the benefit of not bothering with a car. We've had real trouble parking a car in coastal resorts and that's been out of season. I can imagine Frigliana in August being quite busy.

Sounds like the bus to and from Nerja would be a good option too, should you want to a change of scene.

Tough choice. If it was me (and I wish it was, I've been to Granada a few times but need to go back again and I've got a vague plan of a Granada/Nerja/Frigliana based holiday) and I hadn't arranged the airport transfer and I was confident I could park the car for free or very cheaply, I would probably get a car and use it to get to and from the airport and then maybe once to Nerja and once to Granada which is probably all you want to do by the sounds of it.

But if you've already sorted your transfer I probably wouldn't bother, make do with what is available locally and get the bus to Nerja once or twice.

I would get the bus to Nerja and have a day or 2 there, the old town is lovely and there's lots of tapas bars, towards the middle there are some lovely boutiquey shops and pavement cafes near the balcon de europa. Depending on when in August you are there the Malaga Feria is on for a week, it starts 11th August this year I think. It's a great city to visit. Later on in August in Frigiliana there is the tres cultural festival which runs from 23rd-26th August and the town is amazing at this time. There are street entertainers, a brilliant street market, promenade, pop up bars/restaurants, kids entertainment and the fabulous ruta de la tapa, my husband did all 19 in one evening last time 😵 small beer 1/3rd pint) and a tapa for about €2 and each participating bar stamps your card. If you do them all you get a t shirt, flag, scarf etc. We love it there then. There are also some amazing restaurants with spectacular views, we would recommend Adarve, oshun, Miramar and el jardin. There's a lovely courtyard in the old town too, el conventillo is a lovely restaurant there. Plus next to it just up a side street is a brilliant cafe called la tienda selling home made cakes, the lemon cheesecake is to die for. I'm half tempted to buy the whole thing this year 😂 you can also walk the dry river, Rio chillar from Frigiliana to Nerja which we gave never yet done ourselves but know plenty of people who have. Bus links from Nerja can take you within an hour to Malaga, Almunecar, Torrox, rincon de la Victoria (where there is a shopping mall called el ingenio). We haven't ever bothered with a car, but then again, we have been over 20 times and know we will always go back...

Oh, thank you. I’m proper excited now, sounding like my sort of place.

I think I’m not going to bother with a car..just going to wander and get public transport. Even more relaxing. The owner of the property will arrange a taxi, so all good. I can put my feet up and have a Sangria.

I forgot to mention, there are a number of small supermarkets, a butchers etc dotted around but you could also get mercadona to deliver to you provided you're on an accessible road. Alternatively take a case/shopping trolley and get the bus to Nerja, mercadona is only a couple of minutes walk from the bus station. It's such a beautiful place, we can't wait to get back there!hope you have a fab time.
