Anybody know how safe it is to take 3 young children to the Sun Centre in Rhyl if they can't swim?!

We live fairly locally but hubbie unsure of taking kids in there in case they wander off etc. From what I can remember, it starts off shallo-so that littlies can "paddle"-and then gets deeper.Anyone been recently?

I went last summer when I was on holiday up there and I would say yes with some reservations, you'd have to be on the ball. It was very busy, and they do this thing every 20 minutes or so where it 'rains' and it can get very chaotic. None of mine can swim, but they weren't young (8, 6 and 2 at the time) and I was quite stressed for a while even with DH there.
There was a separate baby bit, but I assume at least 1 of yours is old enough to wander so it would need at least 2 of you with them.

Having said all that we went in August (peak holiday time) and it was foul rainy weather, so this time of year it might be quieter.

Have not been there but I am always really careful at pools as my ds got trapped under a dinghy once in a busy pool. Luckily I saw what had happened immediately and got him out. Will you have anyone with you?

Oh blimey!!

I went to the Sun Centre about four years ago now and hopefully it's improved.

Loads of people sitting around the pool smoking so felt like we were enjoying the rainforest experience in a fug of fag puff. Groups of guys sitting with cans of lager. More tatts than I've ever seen in one room at the same time. And poolside vending machines for Pot Noodles.

It does start off shallow but agree it can get so busy it might depend how many kids dh had to keep an eye on.

LOL, pointydog - yes it's still a bit like that although I didn't notice anyone smoking, but we were on holiday so didn't give a toss

TricityBendix · 17/05/2007 21:53

Are you serious about pot noodles?

There'll be no smoking in there though now, we're in Wales, see.

SlightlyMadStew · 17/05/2007 21:55

Are you taking them alone? Are there child adult ratios? Will you be able to meet these?

pointydog · 18/05/2007 16:48

oh yes, most certainly pot noodles. I'm pretty sure there was also a McCain chips machine but memory not 100% on that.

And I think the young lads were breaking a rule by drinking cans of lager and the assistants were just too scared to enforce it. Although that doesn't really make the picture any better, does it?

Glad the smoking's stopped though.

thanks all! just got back to this. we would be going early on a sunday morning probably-as i said we are very local-so hopefully not too much beer-swilling going on...although knowing Rhyl...!
They are 9,8,7 but none can swim without armbands as yet. I remember the "rain" and the "waves" from long ago so I take it it's not changed much from when I used to go?
maybe we'll stick with the baths for a while longer until we can at least trust them to be able to get themselves out of any difficulties. (experienced my dd2 going under water in a kiddies pool in Spain a couple of years ago...only looked away for a few seconds and when I turned back she was lying on top of the water.Fortunately, she was ok.But still very nervous when looking after kids in water now.
