Affordable holiday options in Europe in Aug

Need inspiration and ideas for summer holiday in August. What are your favourites?

Budget would ideally be approx £2000 for family of 4. Could stretch to £3000 all in bit lower end better (travel l, accommodation and spends) (2 teenagers 17 and 13)

Needs to be somewhere with reliable sunny/hot weather. Beach and/or pool. We like sitting in sun, having swim, occasional day out, bar or restaurant in evening. Chilled rather than party town.

Was thinking France but no idea which area to look. Or Spain or Portugal.
We could take car or fly. Not camping. Self catering or hotel with b&b.

Totally overwhelmed by choices - please inspire me!!!

There are some good priced places in the French Alps where there's loads to do for older kids.
Fly or drive - both are possible.

Thank you - will have a look at French alps.

Ricekrispie - that looks great. Have you been? A bit like centreparks? It looks good value too. What was it like? Is it v crowded? Or easy to do the activities etc? Kids would love the surfing, sailing and paddleboarding.

We did 2 weeks in Tenerife last year for under 3k for 6 people half board.

Budget would ideally be approx £2000 for family of 4.

Good luck with that one in August in Europe.

The busiest time ever.

Try eurocamp. We go every August, to Brittany or the vendee- lovely beaches, pretty good weather.

Tents are cheapest and fun for 10/11 nights, caravans cost more.
Our hols usually come in at roughly £1300/1500.

Self catering, BBQs and cheap dinners, one or two dinners out. Simple pleasures- ice cream, beach, books, pool.

Worth a look! Only problem could be we book well ahead, might be mostly booked up by now.

When you say "no camping" are you ruling out glamping and mobile homes? We're having a two week holiday in France in three campsites - few days in a "safari" tent (Eurocamp) in the Vendee, then a week in a glamping tree house in the Gers (Yelloh villages) and then 3 nights in the Dordogne in a mobile home (Eurocamp again). With the ferry as we are doing the overnight crossing to St Malo (pricey) it comes to £1700 and then of course spending money and petrol, so probably in all, £2500. (Shorter ferry crossings are cheaper).

artichokehearts · 13/05/2018 18:41

This is the place in the Gers we're staying FYI. Going to this area as apparently a lot of castles that DH wants to see. Supposed to be a bit like Tuscany. www.yellohvillage.co.uk/camping/le_lac_des_3_vallees

We're got flights to Crete for 5, hotel accommodation (2 bed suite room only) and car hire for about £2k - 10 nights middle of August. Obviously spends / food on top.

I think the key is booking early - the cost of the same flights is nearly double now.

BarbaraofSevillle · 14/05/2018 10:42

Put your requirements (dates, party size, departure airports but tick all destinations) in here and see what comes up.

If you leave it as late as possible in August it is likely to cost less. Also if you are in northern England and can fly from Scottish airports after their schools have gone back, that can save money.

Anywhere in the Med or Canaries will be reliably hot in August, but northern Spain (Costa Brava or Dorada) seems the best value of the above options, or Greek Islands or Malta. All these places are also good value for eating out or food shopping too.

Ricekrispie22 · 14/05/2018 17:28

Yes we've been and all of us enjoyed it. It was everything it said on the tin. We went when it was full but it was still relaxed. It was busy but there's so much space, so it never felt crowded. There are loads of peaceful little areas to escape to. The other holiday makers were all un-pushy and courteous. Our DC still keep in touch with some of the friends they made.
Accessing the activities was all straightforward. There's such a range; we were spoilt for choice!

beckik01 · 16/05/2018 23:29

Check out the 'zafiro ' hotels in Majorca! We love them, worth every single penny. Zafiro can picafort is our usual choice and we will be returning in 4 weeks!

namechangedtoday15 · 16/05/2018 23:51

Ha! Just looked at a family suite in August at one of those hotels and it was 13,000 euros for 10 nights! And that was self catering and doesnt include flights.

Might be slightly above the OPs budget of around £2k Hmm

beckik01 · 17/05/2018 07:35

What! No way! We have got a week there in June for 3 of us for 1500!

MissWimpyDimple · 17/05/2018 07:50

If you try for places which are more weighted towards the Northern European market you might be lucky. Germany, Holland etc are all (mostly) back at school for August.

Centreparks in Holland for example is cheaper (but weather not reliable).

Try the Venetian coast, places like jesolo, or a cottage etc on Marina di Venezia or Ca'savio.

You can fly to Venice and bus it to the site easily.

Barbeasty · 17/05/2018 09:03

Have you looked at Brittany Ferries holidays?
Although the ferry crossings themselves aren't cheap, if you book a house through them too is doesn't actually end up costing a huge amount more than the crossing alone.
We've been to one of their houses in northern Spain for the last couple of years, pool shared between 2 houses, sleeps 6 people, for under £2000 including the ferry.
