First time travelling with just handluggage on a plane. Do i need to put those freebie shampoo/ beauty product sachets and wet wipes in the clear plastic bag?

No to the wipes, yes to sachets with liquid in them

lilcolibri · 08/05/2018 21:57

yes

NewSense · 08/05/2018 21:57

I believe so, yes :) maybe not wet wipes though. Not sure I've ever put wet wipes in a clear baggy.

Oh, and you're only allowed as many as will go in one plastic bag...about 10 maximum. I got caught out by this when I flew recently. I didn't know the number was limited, and thought as long as they were all in clear bags you'd be ok (I hadn't been through an airport for, um, 18 years...). The man on security had such a face on as he pulled out all my cosmetics, toiletries, nail polishes...he soon put me right on that and escorted me all the way back to check-in (at Gatwick on a really busy day - the humiliation Blush) to check my hand luggage in the hold. God, I was mortified. I won't be making that mistake again Grin

wizzywig · 09/05/2018 12:35

Oh god abbie that was a walk of shame

Oh god abbey44, I’m cringing just thinking about that. 😳

I hadn’t travelled in years and had to fly to England recently. I made that many mistakes, if I had been in America I would be behind bars by now! I put too many things in the bags, my little girls flask was full of water, had a tin of monster in my hand luggage AND I forgot that my dress had metal zips so had to be searched. Thankfully they were great with my youngest (she is 22 and has SN) and she giggled at me being searched.

On a related point, I got a great bag from Home bargains, recently, for £10. It is the maximum size for hand luggage, is a rucksack and has loads of pockets. If you pay for the longer legged seats, you can carry on a laptop bag/hand bag, so my youngest and I also carry a smaller backpack each. It works out cheaper than paying for a case.

OP check out all the tips on you tube on how to squeeze a million items into a case. It has transformed my travelling for me.

Sorry I mean flew for the first time last year, but have travelled again recently

Skyllo30 · 09/05/2018 14:07

There’s technically a 10 item limit but I’ve never been checked - must not go through Gatwick! I travel with disposable contacts so not sure if they count as one item or 10.

I always seem to be swabbed, once in Belfast they swabbed every single item in my crammed liquids bag!

hardheadedwoman · 09/05/2018 14:08

My colleague was made to put wet wipes in the plastic bag recently

dementedpixie · 09/05/2018 14:23

There isn't a 10 item limit. You can have as many containers of 100 MLS or less that will fit in the clear plastic resealable bag so that it can still be sealed. The bag should be max size 20x20cm. You could have lots of 20ml containers or a few 100mls ones, just whatever fits while ensuring the bag can be closed again

dementedpixie · 09/05/2018 14:27

From the link I gave earlier:

If you do take liquids in your hand luggage:
• containers must hold no more than 100ml
• containers must be in a single, transparent, resealable plastic bag, which holds no more than a litre and measures approximately 20cm x 20cm
• contents must fit comfortably inside the bag so it can be sealed
• the bag must not be knotted or tied at the top
• you’re limited to 1 plastic bag per person
• you must show the bag at the airport security point

(Mentions nothing about number of containers just that the bag should be 20x20 cm max which can hold no more than a litre)

ArialAnna · 09/05/2018 14:33

Space saver tip - I don't usually put mascara, eye liner or small pots of cream in the plastic bag - they are either too thick or too little liquid to set off the sensor. But then you need to make extra sure all other liquids are in the plastic bag as if security staff search you and find them they will insist that things need to go in the plastic bag.

PositivelyPERF · 09/05/2018 14:34

The security woman told me I had too many items in one of the plastic bags, last time. She said they needs to easily check the items and too many items in one bag slows things down.

abbey44 · 09/05/2018 18:35

It was the security man who gave the number - though he did say "about" 10. I had a LOT more than that Blush. And, just to make things even worse (I know....) I had helpfully taken all my medications (eye drops and insulin pens) out of their boxes (which had the prescription stickers on) to save space. They all had to be individually tested to make sure they were actually what I said they were. God, I go hot and cold just thinking about it all.... I'm sure he went on his tea break and told his colleagues about That Woman he had on his conveyor that morning. And I bet they didn't believe there was anyone quite that clueless...

Anyway. You're right, it was a particularly uber-cringeworthy walk of shame. I won't be That Person again!

ChickenInPants · 09/05/2018 19:20

Yes at Manchester i was told to put wet wipes in a clear bag and also my large stash of makeup i was told was too much and had a faff with that so it all goes in hold nowHmm

Amanduh · 09/05/2018 19:29

I’ve taken about three plastic bags before and never been stopped 😂 my friend turned up at the airport with a huge clear bag too and it wasn’t stopped. Think it must depend who you’ve got on the day!
