When I travel with my daughter (23 months) I take a pad of paper, some pens lots of stickers (especially shiny ones), a small megasketcher (you can buy small ones), lots of food bits and pieces and a book (the best ones are ones with lots of pictures, like a picture dictionary). Usually we dont even use half of it as she is distracted by everything else, including the air hostesses, other passengers, whatever is out of the window and all the bumpf(magazines etc) in the seat pocket. I fly shorthaul pretty regularly with her on my own as we live abroad and my Dh cant always get time off and trial and error has taught me to take stuff like this that I can just stick in my handbag!
Hope you have a great holiday.

Sorry about all the spelling mistakes and grammar errors, hope you made some sense of that.

Agree re mega sketcher - perfect for take off and landing. Also a portable DVD player loaded with fave DVDs.

We played a game that kept ds (same age as your little one - 4 hour flight) happy for quite a while. We walked up the aisle again and again with me carrying him and played a game where he had to guess which row daddy was on - he thought it was hilarious as I went ' is it this one?' again and again. Probably drove other passengers crazy and it wasn't easy on my back but he liked it!!

PinkChick · 17/05/2007 15:26

meant to ask thata ctually..can you take a portable dvd on plane??, were going to cyprus in aug and really wanted to take dd's even if only when we get there, just wanted to check they can be taken and if only in suitcase or in handluggage to be used in flight?

PinkChick · 17/05/2007 15:27

we packed a dora travel size suitcase on pully handle for dd with her toys, teddy/doll, snacks, drinks etc, she loved it and pulled it along herself most of time

Scottishmum31 · 18/05/2007 19:54

Portable dvd players can be used in flight, but not during take off and landing.

Wrap every pencil, pen, book and game (using recycled paper of course! or fabric) for the little one. Unwrapping is constant fun!

If you can get hold of a game called Name-Its, i highly recommend for the older children. Once they have the hang of it, they can devise their own '.....ers' that are relevant on the plane, eg - Trolleyer, BingBonger, Clouder and so on. If you are familiar with Name-Its, you know what i am meaning. If not, i am talking a lot of nonsense!

PinkChick · 19/05/2007 20:01

thankyou Scottishmum31, is that all airlines then or dya think it would be worth while to check ours?

easywriter · 19/05/2007 20:09

Agree heartily with DingALongCow but would also wrap things up. ie wrap up the crayons and pad, it doesn't matter that they're not new, it's about ticking away those precious minutes. DD will love opening them and then she gets to use them, obviously all the rubbish stays on the plane. I've been flying long haul (14 or so hours) at least once a year with my twin daughters since they were one, it's never failed me yet.

noonar · 19/05/2007 20:13

mine like to decorate their trays/ seat arms with dozens on tiny novely stickers takes them ages to peel them off the backing and they love fiddling about with them.

jellybrain · 21/05/2007 22:27

Thanks, there's some brilliant ideas here. Def. taking crayons and books. have also been a bit indulgent and brought some 'Dress up bears' which she'll enjoy during the holiday too.
I'm intrigued re 'Namers' - tell me more...

lastly does anyone know how to play dot cricket?
