I went to turkey last September and that was just a few weeks after there was bombings and trouble.
We were thinking about cancelling but we still went and had a fantastic time. We are going again in 4 weeks and i wouldnt cancel this time either unless i was advised to do so by the foreign office.

tiredemma · 15/05/2007 15:18

yes I would.

I would be more scared of a day in london.

Turkey is a lovely country that has recieved bad press.

totallyfloaty35 · 15/05/2007 18:27

thanks ,i love turkey and im actually half turkish but i got a bit freaked by the bombing as tourist areas tend to get targeted

Depends really. If you have been to Turkey before and are otherwise comfortable with being there, i.e. you're familiar with the culture and you know your way around etc, I'd say it would be fine to go. I wouldn't go personally b/c I've never been and know nothing about it really so I'd be too nervous with recent events. That's not to say I think it's necessarily unsafe but I'd be too nervous to really enjoy the holiday. Check the latest travel warnings and advice on the govt websites for travel advice if that will help you decide. I do think though that you need to sometimes have a fatalist attitude and as long as you are not walking into a warzone (which it certainly doesn't seem to be in Turkey by any stretch of the imagination) then you should assume as long as you keep your wits around you and are careful you would be just as safe as you would at home.

Carmenere · 15/05/2007 23:24

I would go, it is likely to be isolated violence(I hope), I was in Bodrum and Istanbul last week, had a lovely time, I'd go again tommorow.

MaureenMLove · 15/05/2007 23:28

You can't live like that or you'd never go anywhere. London, USA, Spain, to name but a few. I know its hard, but you have to try to put it out of your mind. All those people that were involved in the London bombings, including my dh, still get up and go to work and you must go on holiday and try to relax.

lapsedrunner · 16/05/2007 06:52

Yes, go

caroline3 · 16/05/2007 12:50

Depends on your attitude to risk and how worried you get about things. Personally I would go, if your numbers up, its up... Turkey is such a fantastic place to go on holiday and Club Lykia World is meant to be brilliant. It's not like going on holiday to Baghdad or the Gaza strip is it!! Have fun if you go, I wish I was going to Club Lykia World...

totallyfloaty35 · 16/05/2007 18:41

thanks,i may well go as cant find anything that matchs the facilities of lykia world anyway

I'd go, i mean we live in a country thats been bombed, some of us live in cities that have been bombed.

TequilaMockinBird · 16/05/2007 18:47

We went to Egypt last year only a week or so after the bombing there and imo it was the safest time to go! The security had really been tightened up and tbh i didnt even think once about the bombing the whole 2 weeks we were there. The only time i wouldnt go after anything like this was if the foreign office advised against it.

Pimmpom · 17/05/2007 17:54

totally - I'm booked for next August so you'll have to let me know what you think of Lykia.

totallyfloaty35 · 17/05/2007 23:11

Well, paid the balance today so we definately going, thanks for all your help and advice.

totallyfloaty35 sorry, must x posted as i was finding link.

Have a nice holiday. I am sure you will be fine.

motheroftwoboys · 24/05/2007 18:19

We are going to Lykia world in July (can't wait) and hadn't even considered cancelling. We went to Egypt last New Year and some people were concerned about there but we have never let it bother us. Just as much chance of something bad happening in the UK in my opinion. Hope we both have a fab holiday.

paulaplumpbottom · 24/05/2007 18:20

No, holdidays should be relaxing and I couldn't relax in a place where I felt in danger

motheroftwoboys · 25/05/2007 14:21

Nowadays, sadly, ones personal safety cannot ever be guaranteed so we can't live our lives being frightened of something that will probably never happen. My mum used to worry about anything and everything and ended up hardly ever going out - never mind going on holiday. Not a good way to live.

totallyfloaty35 · 25/05/2007 14:40

Oh well, booked it now,so yes i hope we both have a fab time as i have heard its a brilliant resortthankyou for all the feedback though everyone

I have been to Lykia twice. It is fab and you will have a great time. The views are sensational. Let me help you with the geography; the resort is set away up a hill away from the town of Olu Deniz with no other hotel nearby. The complex is fully fenced and security is high (not because of terrorism but because they don't want uninvited, non-paying guests there). I wouldn't hesitate to go if I were you. We were in Sharm el Sheikh in August 2005 just a couple of weeks after the bombings and never felt unsafe. The hotel was nice and empty because quite a lot of people had cancelled.

totallyfloaty35 · 26/05/2007 17:26

thanks copycat,is thare shady places and things for babies to do? my dds will be 12yrs,9yrs and 10months when we go and there seems to be masses for the older ones but im a bit worried about the baby in the heat, any info gratefully received

hi floaty
the most important thing to know is that, despite claims of loads of swimming pools at Lykia, only TWO are shallow enough for toddlers/babies. One is in the fenced off kids club and has shade and the other is at the Childrens Paradise area. This pool is like a small beach with shingle/sand for your 10 month old to crawl over and the water is very shallow at the edge. There are baby slides (three I think) here where you could slide your baby and catch her easily. If he/she is happy in armbands there are plenty of other slides (short, slow ones) which end in deep water and you could have the baby on your lap and slide down together. There is a small playground up at the Children's Paradise too. The kids club located midway between the Village and the Residence has facilities for heating up milk etc which you can use. The first time we went to Lykia our yougest son was 2 (nearly three) and we spent a lot of time sitting on sun loungers inside the kids club so he could play safely in the pool there. I think with a young baby and older kids you will have much more freedeom to be up at Kids Paradise where your older two will be very happy. Not sure if the Kids Club take babies but I expect you know that from your holiday brochure.
There are umbrellas and trees up at Kids Paradise for shade and there is a kids restaurant there too for lunch. Personally we always made the effort to have lunch in one of the three buffet restaurants (Village, Residence or Marina) as the choice was much greater. The resort is very buggy friendly but beware very hilly!

totallyfloaty35 · 26/05/2007 21:57

oh thanks so much for that info one other thing i have a large village room booked but someone said they were awful and i should have booked the residence,is that true?

OP posts:
copycat · 26/05/2007 22:28

Absolutely not. The large Village rooms have been refurbished and are lovely - 2 separate bedrooms one with lounge area, small dressing room and shared bathroom with very large walk in shower, balcony. We prefer top floor for the views and so that you don't have anyone above scraping chairs etc but you would have to carry the buggy (and the baby!) up the stairs.
