Driving in Corsica

Hi

I've just booked a holiday to Corsica for May half term. Will be taking my dd(12) and ds(8) on my own as hubby is away with work that week. I have booked a villa on the Balagne cost and will be flying into Bastia airport. I have hired a car but have to admit I'm a bit nervous about driving as I've heard the road can be a bit hair raising. I've ordered some maps, etc., but wondered if anyone had some experience of driving and whether there are roads that are ok to drive with children in the car but will still allow me to see a bit of the island whilst we're there?

We went in October half term - so probably quieter than you will experience - but I found it fine. I'm the only driver (DH doesn't drive) but I guess I got some (!) help with navigation that you might not be able to call on, though maybe your DD could help with maps? We had two five year olds in the back.

The main roads were absolutely fine and I'm fairly sure there are 'T' roads all the way from Bastia airport to Calvi. There is a bit of dual carriageway in Bastia but once you are away from there we didn't come across any but as I say, the main roads are still fine. We stayed near Porto Vecchio. We visited Bonifacio (also on main road) and then a few places on well used but more windy side roads, and again all fine. We didn't go inland so I don't know what the more mountainous areas are like but I'm fairly sure the crossing from Bastia to Calvi will be fine.

Leaving Bastia airport was also totally fine and I remember it being pretty clearly signposted - have had far worse experiences elsewhere! We dropped the car back in Bastia 'downtown' and that was also fine.

As I say, roads were relatively quiet when we went but we didn't encounter any bad driving or aggressive drivers etc. Signposting was pretty good everywhere we went, lots of places have two names (French and Corsican) but this is pretty easy to work out and the signs are the common/standard signage you get all over France.

Hope that helps!

Thank you! That has set my mind at rest. My 12 year old is pretty sensible and notices far more than me so I'm sure she will be a real help on the road 👍😄
