One of the most famous WWI memorials in northern France is Thiepval, 160km north of Paris. It is the largest British war memorial in the world, and more than 73,000 names of missing British soldiers are engraved in the stone pillars of the colossal arch. The site also has a large Commonwealth cemetery and an informative visitors' centre.
The Museum of The Great War is a thought provoking museum which gives a good overview of WWI particularly as it presents the experiences of the major participants (France, Britain and Germany) in a three-way presentation. It focuses on the origins and consequences of war as well as experiences of daily life among both the armed and civilian populations. There is much to see in the way of weapons, memorabilia, photos, and press cuttings as well as a film. it's in the centre of Péronne.
The Canadian War Memorial at Vimy Ridge is poignant and you can also see well-preserved trenches from both sides of the fighting. We were amazed at how close they really were to each other and the appalling conditions under which the soldiers lived for months at a time in dug-out foxholes. There's a small museum too.
