The last time I Bought travel insurance was years ago before the kids.

So looking at getting travel insurance for trip to Egypt, that I booked on a whim. What things do I need to look for when buying it? Seems to be so many companies about and I don't know where to start.

And when do I do the start date if I buy annual cover? Would I start cover from now or closer to departure date?

You buy cover now and then then it will ask you for trip dates. It's better to buy now as then if you need to cancel you are covered.

I use comparison websites and cashback websites for insurance.

Look for what's important to you as cover. For me I look for repatriation and medical cover, holiday cancellation details (on what circumstances they'll pay out), curtailment, theft of passports, missing luggage, and gadget cover.

Check you can get cancellation cover for Egypt - what are the current warnings for travel to the region?

Do you need annual or single trip cover?

Thank you @SilverHairedCat will look to see if it specifically covers Egypt. I was just going to buy annual worldwide cover but may need to buy more specific insurance.

A lot of the country is still in a danger zone according to the UK government: www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/egypt

Where are you heading?

Ah bugger, sorry to have been the bearer of bad news.

However at least the good news is that those are two area in the green zone, with limited warnings.

Are you OK?

I meant I heard it on Mumsnet in one of my other threads a few days ago, not from u. That's why I thought I should get travel insurance sorted sooner rather than later.

Tripadvisor forum seems to deem it pretty safe.

Ah ok, well I hope you get to enjoy the trip!

Martin Lewis is usually a good place to start. Read his ' need to knows'. But bear in mind, he's focused on the cheapest, which for insurance is rarely a good idea - because to be the cheapest, the insurance company has to shave it's costs, and so offer less cover.

Some travel insurance companies include Egypt within Europe Confused which might make it cheaper than worldwide insurance. We've had good policies at a good price from Debenhams but have never claimed so can't comment on that side of things. Unless you are travelling 3 times or more in a year, a single trip policy will probably be cheapest. Buy it now and single trip policies cover the period of travel, but you will also be covered for cancellation if you are ill, suffer bereavement or other insurable event prior to travel prevents you from going.
