If I travel in a black cab or any other taxi for that matter, does dd have to be in a child seat? Going to from airport which is 5 minute drive away and will be going by taxi, obviously!

what are the rules, anyone know?

tia

You don't have to use one legally - taxis are exempt. However it is obviously recommended that you do use a seat if at all possible. Doesn't matter how short the journey is - most accidents occur within a mile of home. Will you not need a car seat whilst away?

DelGirl · 13/05/2007 21:06

thanks, thought so .

I know Hulababy, i'm not over;ly comfortable with it tbh but will be hiring a seat on holiday and I don't want to take mine with me. Can I sit her on my lap with the seat belt over both of us perhaps?

You can roll around as much as you like I believe.

Dh & the car occasionally bugger off on 3 day business jollies together, leaving me to take two under 3s to the CM in a minicab (it's a mile away & quiet streets but still). Apparently it's perfectly legal .

Is dd old enough for a booster seat? A mate of mine arranged with a local firm she uses regularly that they'd let her leave the booster in the taxi, keep it in the office & then send it with the driver to pick her up from the airport on her return!

LIZS · 13/05/2007 21:09

no that is worse, in an accident you'd crush her How old is your dd ?

LadyOfTheFlowers · 13/05/2007 21:10

dont put the belt over her too. if there is an accident you will crush her.
belt yourself in as normal and hol on to her, tight.
you will need to act as her seatbelt.

Hulababy · 13/05/2007 21:10

NO Do not put the seat belt around both of you. This is really dangerous. In an accident you would crush her.
How old is DD?

DelGirl · 13/05/2007 21:10

not really, she's only 2.

If in a black cab I think the safest way is to have her in her pushcahir strapped in, placed backwards in the wheelchair space.

I'm afraid in a normal car it is just holding her yourself, outside of your own seat belt.

DelGirl · 13/05/2007 21:15

I'll ask for a black cab then, thanks!

tbh I think I 'd put her in the adult belt rather than hold her myself. You may find they have flip out boosters and/or adjustable heightshoulder straps, when you book ask if they can help you out , you never know (we've had a people carrier with a flip out seat and a harness before now)

DelGirl · 13/05/2007 21:17

I'll give them a ring, now actually so I can put my mind at rest and all of yours too

If you have plenty of time ebfore you go it is also worth phonming round lots of private hire and black cab firms and asking if they have any car seats available for use. Some do now if pre booked.

DelGirl · 13/05/2007 21:21

just phoned the usual place and they dont have seats & you can't pre-book a black cab. I'll do some more phoning round tomorrow.

you'll be pleased to know i've booked a cab with a car seat

Can I ask what you all do when you go on holiday abroad? we are thinking of going away to spain, and would take occasional taxi rides, do we need seat? dd will be 18mths

LIZS · 14/05/2007 09:21

Theoretically seats are compulsory everywhere within the EU on the same basisi if not stricter than UK but here may eb a similar taxi get out clause.(can't locate the site atm which claimed to summarise for each country) We have had airport taxis prebooked with seats or waited for one which has a seat available.

lou33 · 14/05/2007 09:32

in the past i have used mini cabs, and they have stored the seat for me until i returned home

any chance you could find a firm to do that for you?
