That’s it really. Looking for inspiration.
It will have to be in July or August of 2019. Maximum of 2 weeks.

Me, DH and 13, 17 and 18 year olds.

Budget is generous but not excessive. We are all vegetarian if that makes any difference.

I suggested Australia, but weather in July may be a bit off putting.
DH -Peru. Not sure if I could deal with the altitude. I couldn’t handle the volcano on Tenerife.
Teenager said Japan.

We never had a honeymoon - so a white sand beach with palm tree would be a treat. We also never had many holidays when the DC were younger as we didn’t have the budget but now we are better off we can treat them
It’s a great position to be in.

Mexico or Twin Centre Mexico and NYC

Tweennightmare · 10/04/2018 13:11

What about a safari in Tanzania followed by R&R in Zanzibar

SpicyTomatos · 10/04/2018 13:56

Safari + beach sounds like a good idea.

Alternatively, SE Asia will give you beaches. Malaysia might be the easiest, whilst Thailand the most popular. Both score highly for veggies (www.oliverstravels.com/blog/most-vegetarian-friendly-countries/)

There is the whole of the Caribbean too. If that is too costly, then central America e.g. Costa Rica can offer something more affordable.

Hadn’t thought of a safari. That’s a spectacular way to celebrate.

It is going to be a bit of once in a lifetime holiday unless there is a lottery win in the future.

Safaris aren't cheap though, so be warned!!

ShanghaiDiva · 10/04/2018 14:36

NW Australia has great weather in July and you could explore the Kimberley.
SE Asia tends to be wet in July, but dry areas - Borneo, Bali, Java, central Vietnam, parts of Thailand.
China - but can be very hot and humid in some areas.

Japan was amazing, have to agree with your DS. It was far beyond what I expected.

Namibia also excellent at that time of year.

glitterbiscuits · 10/04/2018 16:06

Any chance you could elaborate on both please Dontcallme?

This wet weather always makes me think of travel.

Sri Lanka or Kerala. Amazing food.

Japan: Tokyo is what I thought about when I thought about Japan, even then I thought neon, not the modern juxtaposed with the ancient shrines all around the city.

Go to other areas e.g. Hakone and all of a sudden you are in rich lush mountains. The scenery was beautiful. It had hot springs and we stayed in a royaken - traditional B&B, served by an old lady in traditional dress, private onsen, and VERY different food.

We went to Kyoto and took the bullet train and loved the ancient buildings and more temples. We saw bamboo forests, old funicular railways, museums full of samurai treasures. We ate stuff that was weird and wonderful. We only had just over a week and did loads. I would love to go back.

We did it ourselves and met people staying in Air BnB and it wasn't as expensive if you are native food or Korean.

Namibia is an easy safari. Safe country which you can self drive easily. It's got more than just game as the skeleton coast has seals and penguins that you can kayak amongst.

The sand dunes and Death Valley in the South, wild camping and tribal visits in the north east. Conservation and then the animals.

We have an extension to Zambia and Victoria Falls for the tick box factor, but def a trip of a lifetime.

We are off to Sri Lanka at Christmas and that also looks fab and a great combo. Ancient sites, sun, sea, food, history, safari (elephants mainly), conservation with the turtles.

My other favourite holiday was China, a bit like Japan in some ways, but very different in others. I'd include that on my list too.

Costa Rica is on my list as is Equador and Galapagos.

West coast Thailand would be ok July / August...we went with 3 dcs to Ko Samui...3yrs ago ( ages 21,18,15) food, culture and scenery was fabulous...we took boat trip and went snorkelling at marine national park, Thai cooking class and local markets, great wildlife ...it inspired my dcs to go travelling further in SE Asia
You could spend a few days in Bangkok or Singapore other end of holiday

Stopyourhavering64 · 10/04/2018 23:08
  • sorry East coast of Thailand is not as wet as west in July/Aug!...so Ko Samui is fine!
ssd · 10/04/2018 23:08

fly drive, san francisco to san diego, through the 101

glitterbiscuits · 12/04/2018 15:20

Thanks for the suggestions so far. I think we have rules out anything with us having to drive as we both drive a lot here.
I’ve been looking at holidays all over my lunch break.

We love safari holidays and you could look at South Acrica.

Everyotherweekend · 14/04/2018 03:49

Queensland ? Still hot 25+ and the further north you go the hotter it gets. Lots of adventure type stuff to keep young adults entertained, great food and some of the best beaches in the world !

BradleyPooper · 14/04/2018 04:19

I would stay in Europe in July / August but do something fabulous and five star.

Most of the Southern Hemisphere will be in "winter" in July, Caribbean has hurricanes then and lots of SE Asia is in monsoon / rainy season.....
