have you low-energy lightbulbs already?

switched electricity to a green supplier?

SleeplessInTheStaceym11House · 11/05/2007 16:27

right cloth nappies check, we reuse our carrier bags at tesco and use them to line the peddle bin for kitchen.

will look into a greener energy supplier

and most of the lights i have are low energy, although dds room isn't but her lights never on, till winter and il get that at somepoint soon!

Take as much as you can to charity shops rather than binning it and use freecyle/local ads if possible.
Borrow stuff from friends if they have it spare (and donate).
Use ebay or places like computer exchange to get rid of cds, games etc for a bit of extra cash.
Have a water butt to collect rainwater rather than using fresh from hose in garden.
Buy recylcled paper/loo roll ertc
Get milk delivered if they do it

SleeplessInTheStaceym11House · 11/05/2007 16:34

right i regularily use freecycle and either charity shop or car boot/ebay old stuff depending on my levels of energy

didnt realise they did recycled loo roll, will look next time we go shopping

waterbutt a no go tho as we'r in a flat and dont have a garden!

Try to buy food items that have not been too heavily packaged - ie get an organic vegetable box delivery - some cleaning products (ie Ecover can be refilled - online suppliers are good for this)

Rantum · 11/05/2007 17:14

sorry - my punctuation/grammar is all over the place today

SleeplessInTheStaceym11House · 11/05/2007 17:15

i tend to try and not use cleaning products, also buy a lot of stuff bulk so theres less packaging to the amount of product iykwim, buy fruit and veg from market in local town once a week, although have yet to convince them to let me use my cloth bags so the carrier bags get used for bin liners and i insist on giving them back my used paper bags for re-use (get odd looks tho)

will have to try and look for less packaging on other stuff as well i suppose!

Also, when buying clothes it can be better to spend more on quality clothes that last longer and buy fewer items - reducing the amount that you have to get rid of regularly.

working on dh's mum is bad enough

it's all 'too much effort' and she throws everything away, including my fil's 20 beer bottles/cans each night!! dont get me started, you know the type of person i mean dont you?!

rantum, i was thinking about that recently, only problem with buying better quality is i need the money at the time, however have started to buy a few bits off catologue to get better quality stuff.....would love to shop for clothes in charity shops but they dont cater for my double buggy!!!!

Water butt in garden
Use grey water on garden where possible
Compost

but for me it is just staying away from the shops - the less I buy the less I consume

SleeplessInTheStaceym11House · 11/05/2007 17:25

its hard for me to stay away from shops as ds needs medicine regularily so i hae to go to chemist in town and while away 25minutes...ho hum! will try not to shop!

califrau i feel a bit like that some days, although the amount of rubbish i have a minimal im always trying to 'reduce re-use and recycle' but my MIL jsut wont listen, and i cant wait till (or if) they make it illegal to not recycle here, she'll have a culture shock!!!

NoodleStroodle · 11/05/2007 17:39

Sleepless could you go to the library or park or something instead of the shops...
