Booking.com - incurring foreign payment charge

I've just booked a trip with booking.com and used my credit card to pay. I didn't think they could charge extra for using a credit card, the prices were all quoted in sterling but my credit card has charged me a foreign exchange charge. Had the prices been in euros I would have expected this - but not when they quoted a sterling price. Does any one have any experience about this?
Thanks

The problem is with your credit card provider not Booking.com. You need a credit card that doesn't charge for foreign transactions, like the Halifax Clarity card.

Could be because it gets transferred to Euros when you pay?

If the price was quoted in Euros I would have expected a foreign exchange charge, but it was quoted in GBP.

Raven88, you are probably correct it does get transferred to Euros on payment, but it isn't obvious on the site.

Will look up the Clarity card, but still have an issue with the advertising in GBP and charging in Euros.

I've booked a few places on booking.com and I've just tried to do a dummy booking. The price in the middle of the screen near the book/pay now button is in £, but if you look on the left, it does say

' Price
(your currency) £339 *
Property currency
in EUR € 389
(for 2 guests and 7 nights)

*This price is converted to show you the approximate cost in £. You'll pay in €. The exchange rate may change before you pay.

Bear in mind that your card issuer may charge you a foreign transaction fee'

Sneaky. I don't know how I've paid in the past but will be more careful in the future because I have a clarify card and a Santander Zero card, both of which are for any purchases in foreign currency as they are fee free and you get the best exchange rate, ie the bank rate, not the tourist rate or any rate set by retailers etc which can be as much as 10% worse in cash machines in hotels and convenience stores etc.
