Japan Shopping for KitKats

Mercurial123 · 09/04/2018 01:52

I promised to buy a friend the amazing flavour KitKats they have in Japan so far I've only found green tea and the regular ones. Have been checking in supermarkets, 7-11, Family Mart and Lawson's where should I be looking? Will I find them in Haneda Airport? Thanks!

Mitsukoshi Department store in Ginza? Think they have a food hall. And am pretty sure there are other dept stores that will too.

OhSoTotallyLost · 09/04/2018 02:26

I definitely got some in the airport a couple of years ago. There were still only a few flavours though - think I found about 5 in the end.

Mercurial123 · 09/04/2018 10:24

Tarty thanks I'm going to the National Museum tomorrow before flying home that's on the Ginza Line so I'll drop by.

Ohsototally brilliant thank you! The green tea ones are lovely interested to see what else I can find.

I found Tiramisu ones in Australia. They were amazing !

Mercurial123 · 09/04/2018 12:21

Tiramasu sounds really good why do we just have the boring ones in the UK?!

Steer clear of the red bean ones. My Mum went to Japan and I asked for green tea Kitkats, which I love and crave, but all that she could remember about my request was that it had a colour in it. Those red bean Kitkats just sat around in the cupboard and nobody would eat them except occasionally when my au pair was desperate for chocolate of any sort.

funmummy48 · 09/04/2018 13:03

I contacted Nestle when I got back from Oz and asked why they don't make Tiramisu Kit Kat's in the UK. They replied that there was no demand for them. I replied to them, how did they know if they'd never sold them here. I never heard anything more from them! Maybe we need to start a pressure group? 😉

Mercurial123 · 09/04/2018 13:07

I've tried a red bean paste dessert today it was really bad, I couldn't finish it and I'm not a fussy eater. Must remember not to buy those. I want to try the sake flavour if I can find them.

I think Family Mart, Lawsons etc are too small. You need a 'proper' sized supermarket to find packets of other flavours. Unfortunately I didn't find such a supermarket in central Tokyo and got my KitKats (green tea, ginger, strawberry) in Kyoto.

However the airport is bound to have some 'presentation gift' packs (ie a lot more expensive than the supermarket packets).

Whereabouts are you staying?

pestilentialboundary · 09/04/2018 13:13

The kitkats are regional. You have to travel to find them all, like pokemon. The airport is often a good bet.

Mercurial123 · 09/04/2018 13:39

Plexie I found greentea in Kyoto they didn't have them in the supermarket in Aeon mall or Frescoes. I travelled to Tokyo today I'm staying near Tokyo station.

Sorry, thanks Plexie and Pestil will check if they have them at Haneda.

DH brought back a box of the strawberry ones, and a box of Wasabi ones last time he was in Tokyo. DDs friends loved them, but we all thought they were vile. I'm happy sticking to the dark chocolate ones!

Mercurial123 · 09/04/2018 13:59

Strawberry sounds nice Wasabi not so much. The green tea ones are fab.

OK, I've done some research based on this from 2015
tokyocheapo.com/food-and-drink/where-to-buy-unusual-japanese-kit-kat-flavors/

  1. First Avenue shopping mall at Tokyo Station, near Yaesu exit. It sounds massive and has different shopping zones. Look out for Okashi Land (okashi apparently means sweets)

This post from 2013 references a particular shop:
www.tripadvisor.co.uk/ShowUserReviews-g1066443-d3335829-r180893907-First_Avenue_Tokyo_Station-Chiyoda_Tokyo_Tokyo_Prefecture_Kanto.html

  1. KitKat Chocolatory in Ginza (Google it for location). Sounds very gourmet but might have flavoured Kit Kats (although probably the more expensive presentation boxes).

Otherwise, the airport!

Mercurial123 · 09/04/2018 14:44

Plexus you're a star thank you. I'm across the road from the Yaseu exit. Tokyo station is HUGE it's like a town, insanely busy and utterly confusing!

Not to burst your bubble OP, but for others, the Japan Centre in London sells flavoured Kitkats and seem to have them online. We've bought strawberry ones from the centre, very tasty but expensive.

smerlin · 09/04/2018 14:54

The Kitkat shop in Ginza or airport. I am in Japan atm and so far have seen Tokyo banana KitKats, Mt Fuji strawberry cheesecake, raspberry, green tea and some yellow onsen maedu ones. They are never at Lawson/7-11 sold loose, only mega packs at tourist places I have found and I have been searching everywhere too!

MissEliza · 09/04/2018 15:03

Dh brought a few different flavours back last month. Everyone thought they were vile. The sake flavour was the worst.

Mercurial123 · 10/04/2018 00:02

smerlin thanks, you can buy regular sized green tea flavour in 7-11's in Bangkok I thought (wrongly) it would be the same in Japan. Makes sense now why I can't find them.

All the thanks I'm not in the UK at the moment working away but next time I'm in London may check it out. Though I am enjoying the hunt.

MissEliza did you try the green tea everyone I know who has tried them loves them.

ruddynorah · 10/04/2018 00:06

Tofu Cute sell them online. UK based Japanese stockists. They have all the KitKat flavours they're £2.50 each.

Mercurial123 · 10/04/2018 08:54

Thanks everyone I didn't have time to look in Tokyo station as spent too long in Akakusa, Haneda Airport have a big selection I got the matcha green tea and banana flavours. My friend will be happy.

OP posts:
Tartyflette · 10/04/2018 11:44

Glad you found some Mercurial.

(in Tokyo we had some gorgeous custard filled donuts, light and fluffy and totally divine, except for the matcha green tea flavoured ones which were just weird!)

Mercurial123 · 10/04/2018 12:14

Tarty I love the desserts shaped like fish with the custard fillings, the green tea donuts are fab I liked most things apart from anything with red bean paste in now that is an acquired taste.

Tartyflette · 10/04/2018 16:47

Conversely I quite like red bean paste stuffed into cakes etc! I get them in Chinatown in Soho.
Nowt so queer as folk, as they say Grin
