eating out in Berlin

We're off to Berlin for a few days soon (kid free) and looking for eating suggestions. We are staying fairly close to the Brandenburg Gate and Potsdamer Platz area. We will be travelling hand luggage only so I'm not taking my "posh clothes" - so probably not 3* Michelin type places but decent restaurants serving great food?

Neither DH nor I speak much German, but enough to know most of the food words...

We’re off to Berlin in May so will be watching with interest Smile

Josty and the Lindenbrau restaurants in the Sony Centrum at Potsdamer Platz are really nice trad German food. Everywhere is very child friendly.

Everyone speaks excellent English, but "bitte ein....danke" goes down well.

MozzchopsThirty · 10/04/2018 17:56

Also watching, I'm going for xmas

Go to the best pizza place- 12 Apostel in the railway arches near the museuminsel

tethersend · 10/04/2018 18:00

And the potato bar for breakfast in KaDeWe (dept store) on Kurfürstendamm. Scrambled eggs and potatoes fried with bacon and onion

If you're there on a Sunday, go to the flea market in Boxhagener platz and then for a buffet brunch at one of the surrounding bars.

I'm so jealous, it's my favourite city.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 10/04/2018 18:02

Coffee and cake here

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 10/04/2018 18:02

Am also jealous. Best city ever.

tethersend · 10/04/2018 18:05

Oh god- it looks like 12 Apostel is closed. It was amazing Sad

Hi Tethers. Long time no see! You okay?

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 10/04/2018 18:08

Here for wanky hipsters and a lovely flatwhite.

LondonHuffyPuffy · 10/04/2018 18:18

Borchardt on Französische Straße is awesome if you like schnitzel the size of a dinner plate! It looks really stuffy and traditional but I like it.

tethersend · 10/04/2018 18:20

I'm ok thanks Remus. Well, I was until I found out 12 Apostel had closed! You?

Sorry for hijack, OP

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 10/04/2018 18:25

Am good, thanks.

Sorry, OP!

Do you want recs of things to do? Have you booked online for the Reichstaag dome?

CanYouHearThePeopleSing · 10/04/2018 18:26

Cookies Cream! It's a must do in Berlin, I'd say. It's vegetarian, and some of the best food I've ever eaten (I'm not a veggie). And a great experience too - finding it is all part of the fun...

There's a really great area in East Berlin with loads of different restaurants - I think it's quite famous but the name escapes me. Maybe the guide books would help identify it!

Antislut · 10/04/2018 18:27

Burgermeister. You might have to queue but it's amazing!

VladPutin · 10/04/2018 18:30

I got this as a rec from a local - its out of the way but fun

we went on the ubahn - were staying a short walk from the Potsdammer platz

AvonCallingBarksdale · 10/04/2018 20:35

CanYouHearThePeopleSing Cookies Cream is on my list - is it super smart?

CanYouHearThePeopleSing · 12/04/2018 11:43

It's smart-ish, but not especially so. Jeans and a smart top would be fine. It's quite 'grungy' (if that's a word) inside - especially the bar.

You'd need to book, I'm sure. It is v popular. So worth it though.

VladPutin · 12/04/2018 11:46

Germans don’t do smart IME

AvonCallingBarksdale · 12/04/2018 18:36

Excellent - that’s all booked. Sooo excited now Grin
