Anyone been to both? How do they compare?

Looking for nice beach, seafront/views and local centre (shops and restaurants) to walk around whilst there. Will be me and a 10/11 month old.

I prefer cala d'Or, very kid friendly and pretty little resort with lovely calm waters, a lovely marina and plenty nice restaurants and shops. Out of the two you mention though I prefer Puerto pollenca. Never liked the look of cala millor (haven't been though!).

I prefer Pollensa. Cala Millor is bigger and livelier - perhaps better for teenagers.

We’ve been going to Pollensa with DD since she was a baby and we’ve never had a bad holiday. Nice safe beach, good family oriented restaurants, nice sea front area and the main square is also lovely. It’s a very relaxed place and really good for families.

Puerto Pollensa is very attractive, nice scenery etc and a lot classier than Cala Millor IMHO. The north has lovely mountainous scenery, the east coast is a bit meh in comparison and Cala Millor is much more commercialised. Pollensa is sadly a lot more expensive though!

Personally I didn't like puerto pollensa and found it very fake and pretentious! Expensive as well! Like a pp said, I also preferred Cala d'or and the wee coves out by Cala egos. Wouldn't go back to pollensa to be honest.

Another one here not bowled over by PP. I just found it very bland and it was expensive, even by Mallorca standards. I just don't get the love for it on here, it's a bit cult like, although we did find a gin bar, which could explain things.

The little beaches in the Cala D'Or area are gorgeous. I could sit on one and look at the view for ever.

To throw a wild card into the mix, our favourite area of Mallorca is Paguera, just west of Santa Ponsa. Three lovely beaches and a nice pedestrianised area with a wide variety of restaurants and some shops.

PP every time. Been going on and off with family for around 20 years now. Great base for all other trips, walks and super clean friendly and pretty. Safe waters, very kid friendly but not too young for everyone else to be able to enjoy it too.

Panda81 · 11/04/2018 23:04

Thanks for everyone's input. Cala Millor is definitely out now. I will reconsider Cala D'or and also look at Paguera, that picture looks lovely barbara

Panda Apologies, that's Cala D'Or not Paguera. Paguera beaches are not quite as picturesesque, but its a nice little place and much closer to the airport and Palma than trekking over to either Cala D'Or or PP.

I should mention that nearly everyone who goes there is German so the restaurant menus are in Spanish, German and then English and some are aimed at a German clientele, (buying sausages by the meter or half meter can be fun if you like a lot of meat) but there's still plenty of Spanish food.

I speak and understand a little German and enough Spanish to find my way around, ask directions and order from an untranslated restaurant menu and knowing what I'm going to get, but can't converse in either language and we were fine.

I've only been to Cala D'or but the beaches are lovely, sea is gorgeous and they slope gently so nice and safe for little ones.

Charley50 · 12/04/2018 06:33

If I went to Cala Dor again I'd either hire a car or pay for a taxi to get there. We went on a bus thing which implied it's an hour journey, but it stopped off at about 5 other resorts and a million hotels before it got to us... took about 2.5 hours to get there and 3 on the way back. It's only a 40 minute drive from the airport.

Redtartanshoes · 12/04/2018 18:35

Sorry to hijack thread, does anyone have any experience of Palma?

Charley50 · 12/04/2018 23:01

Red tartan shoes - I was wondering that too...

Redtartanshoes · 13/04/2018 14:16

My boss loves it, and he’s got great taste. Think it’s a good mix of city and beach, there’s some amazing air bnb places

cazzyg · 13/04/2018 16:09

I love Palma. It’s a beautiful city - lots of really nice restaurants and little streets to wander round.

Charley50 · 13/04/2018 19:57

I'm wondering whether to go to Palma or Lisbon for a few days... I suppose Lisbon is more amazing, but the sea will be warm by Palma so it could also be a beach holiday.. maybe I should ask on Chat..?

spanky2 · 13/04/2018 20:31

We went to calla millor in August. The waves were huge. I'm tall and they were so high you couldn't see the horizon when you were above waist deep.

Redtartanshoes · 13/04/2018 21:34

Boss has been To both. Loved both but prefers Palma
