Which is the best place to see Hadrian's wall?
Ideally a bit of museum stuff and a nice car walk.

Chesters roman fort is really good, quite easy to see how it was laid out.

Disfordarkchocolate · 01/04/2018 16:37

Corbridge is compact and very interesting, also Birdoswald and The Sill.

IggyAce · 01/04/2018 16:42

Their is housestread Fort you can walk part of the wall to Sycamore Gap.

Thanks all. Or many options. How do I choose?
Kids are early secondary age.

We enjoyed Housesteads with DCs that age. A short uphill walk from the car park, a small museum and shop/cafe, stunning views and the remains are really impressive.

Thanks! Sounds perfect.

Our kids enjoyed Vindolando museum, but are younger than yours, and were at least as happy just climbing on remaining bits of wall!

You can do Vindolanda & Roman Army mueseum (which is quite interactive for kids about 6 miles from Vindolanda, west along Military Rd) - it’s great & much better than Housesteads or Chester IMO. Vindolanda & RAM are a trust so you can buy tickets for both at Vindolanda.

Also they will start digging at Vindolanda this week & you can watch them work. It’s great.
The Sill is very near Vindolanda & quite interesting.

We have primary aged children. We did Housesteads Fort in the morning (it was a good walk from the car park and the visitor centre had a small museum with a short video presentation) and then Chester's Fort in the afternoon. Chester's ran a live Roman Soldier event when we were there - summer holiday - and had a collection of Roman artefacts in a room. Worth checking Chester's Fort for planned events.

We loved Vindolanda, very atmospheric and drive from there to the Roman Army museum which is close to a very good high up stretch of walk. Was a while ago now, kids weee maybe 6&11. Was a really great day

CMOTDibbler · 01/04/2018 22:40

Ds(11) loved Vindolanda and the roman army museum

Bowerbird5 · 01/04/2018 22:44

Housesteads
Vindolanda
Roman army museum.

You could do them all in one day or split 1 then 2&3.

Fantastic scenery.

Hexham is good for a wander, some independent shops. Mary Anne Rodgers gallery is a few miles away if you like to visit independent galleries.
Hallbankgate has a great Co operative shop and cafe. Very reasonable homemade soup, cakes etc.

Thanks all. We had a great morning at Housesteads before the rain came in.
Will definitely go back sometime in better weather.

Ah yes, the weather. We went in August and despite the sunshine the wind was bitterly cold. Glad you enjoyed it.
