Maldives in August

We are thinking about taking the kids back to the maldives next year however with the eldest starting secondary school the only time I can take 2 weeks off work within a school holiday is in August.

We have been 5 times before but never at that time of year - be honest how was the weather?

I think it's probably a case of pay your money and take your chances. We had great weather at Easter and were thinking about this July. Thing is there isn't a great deal to do in the Maldives if the weather is poor and you will see that the prices drop considerably in our summer. We decided we would be disappointed if it was cloudy and rainy. But you might get lucky.

We used to go for the Aug bank holiday (we lived close) regularly. It rained for 50% of the time 100% of the time. It was fine for us because it was cheap, close and we had books. If I had flown with kids from the U.K, maybe not so much.

We went very early September many years ago. I think it rained a handful of times but don't remember it spoiling the holiday. Plenty of photos of glorious sunshine.

One of the times we went it was in August and it was great for 10 days then it was hit by a tropical depression which was forecast to hang around for the next week (it did). We decided to cut our losses and go to Dubai for our last 6 nights as we were flying home via there anyway. Personally I wouldn't risk it as the children would be bored rigid if the weather was bad.

Thanks everyone. Think your experiences have convinced me not to chance it in August. Think we will take a chance and go during May half term (we have been 3 times before at that time so know what the weather is like). Time for a re-think for august now !

We have the same dilemma, but wouldn’t be able to afford the resorts we like at other times of the year. Think we might risk it....

Caribbean might be better for August....been to Cuba and Antigua then and only 1 day rain ( and even then only for 2-3 hrs) ....beautiful weather rest of the time

What about the Seychelles?

That’s a lovely idea too. Slightly (very) out of our budget. We’ve been to Mexico in August and had a great time, but there was something very special about the Maldives and the only other place which gave us the same feeling was Aitutaki in the Cook Islands (26 hours on a plane does not appeal, nor is the exchange rate as good as it was a decade ago.)
Looking at European ‘luxury’ packages for the summer, they all seem so expensive and I don’t think I could get excited by the anticipation, which is part of the holiday pleasure...
Apologies for hijacking a thread btw!

We have looked at Europe in the past and for what we wanted the price was ridiculous, we got far more for our money going long haul. Apart from short breaks the only place we've been to in Europe in recent years was Santorini, it's a beautiful island. Depending on the age of your children you would have to choose your hotel carefully.

Bluntness100 · 03/04/2018 17:44

Ive been twice in August and it was wall to wall sunshine, although one day we got a spectacular storm, we have also been in July and it was the same, dry and hot. We went also over Xmas and new year and I found it too hot, we couldn't stay out for any length of time, so I prefer the summer months. So I don't think you'd be lucky to have it warm and dry, I think you would need to be very, very unlucky indeed to get rained out totally.

We’ve used avios for the last 4 European holidays - Granada, Nice, Crete and, this year, Zante. We generally go for good quality apartments (Erietta in Tsilivi this year) as the resort style hotels just don’t seem to offer value for money or cater for the mass market. We tried a resort in the canaries a few years ago, and whilst it wasn’t a bad holiday it certainly wasn’t a dream trip. Equally if I went somewhere too expensive I’d feel out of place, I like to get a nice balance of luxury withou being looked down on by other guests for wearing my M&S beach dress (rather than having designer everything!)
