Car hire in Majorca

Hi

I am going to Majorca for 11 nights in September with DH and DD who will be 3. Staying at the Protur Aparthotel in Cala Bona.

Am considering hiring a car for our stay, (pick up from the airport) to avoid a long coach transfer and so that we have some independence to travel around the island whilst we are there.

Bit nervous though... just wondering if anyone has done this.. and if so how you found it? Is it worth it? Are the roads fairly straight forward to navigate? Any tips re companies to use / avoid? Any advice greatly appreciated!

Thanks

Vanrell are excellent, you pick up the car at the airport and price includes all insurance etc. Used them 3 times, very good. Sixt are also good but can be more expensive, think we're going with Hiper this year who are just off airport but recommended and v good price. I would get a price from all 3.
Avoid goldcar and record at all costs !
Driving over there is easy and great to have the freedom of a car.
Have a lovely holiday

We always use Hiper or Centauro with no issues. Both off airport but easy transfers, cheaper than big names like Sixt, no horrendous queues and fair insurance and fuel policies.

Get excess insurance before you go as it is much cheaper. Your quote may say it's comprehensive, but it still doesn't include tyres, glass or underside of car Hmm.

We always hire a car - I can’t bear being stuck in hotel or resort - and hate coach journeys waiting for other people etc.

We hired a car in Majorca a couple of years ago - Europcar I think. We spent a lot of time driving to different parts of the island - we did our own Night Manager tour Blush. Some of the roads were hairpins - even tiepins - think figure 8 hairpins!! to the more secluded points. But then you get to the fabulous places off the beaten track. We had one amazing afternoon at Es Vergeret, Escorca - beach and very long paella lunch in the most wonderful spot.

Bradley Wiggins cycled up the hill we went down in a shorter time than it took DH to drive it Grin

But lots of roads are fine!

Thank you for all the advice, great to have some recommendations and tips.

Going to go for it as will be lovely to be able to explore the Island without enduring public transport 😀

Just wish September was a bit closer now....

Should you choose to drive from Puerto Pollensa to Formentor just be aware it's over a mountain! But worth the trip.

You can't even have one alcoholic drink in Majorca and drive, and you must keep the driving licence & insurance documents with you.
When we went the police were checking all the hire cars at random road blocks but ours didn't have any obvious stickers so we weren't stopped.

I can't remember who we hired the car with but it was my sister's first time driving abroad, she did really well as we had to drive across the island from Palma to Puerto Pollensa in the early hours which was quite easy & quick but then we got to Pollensa & took an hour to find the hotel doh!

Now she drives abroad a lot for business & holidays.

I would agree with avoiding Goldcar and Record-reputation of poor service and huge queues at the airport. We have used Alamo 3 times and always been impressed with service and pick up and drop off was really quick.

I was happy to do the driving on the island except the mountain roads - gladly handed over the keys there!
