Yesterday we took DS1 (2 yr old Thomas fan) and DS2 (11 and 3/4 months) to the West Lancs Railway at Hesketh Bank. its between Leyland and Southport, sort of, in West lancashire. £6 for a family ticket, or as both ours were under 3, £2.50 each adult to ride up and down on the steam train as many times as you like. They run every 15 mins. Its run by a group of chaps who, in the 1960's, were schoolboys who rescued and renovated an steam engine. Now they have a few. Over the years they have built their own 1/2 mile track with a station at either end, yard and shed with the other engines in. The guard clips your ticket on each journey, ds1 had the ticket which ended up full of holes. Its not a huge place and not commercialised (they aren't allowed to put brown tourist signs up so check out the website before you head off. I can't remember the funny website address but google West Lancs Railway and it comes up). They run trains every sunday and Bank Holiday April to October, and have specials days, bank hol weekend 13th May is Teddy Bears Picnic and children with a bear travel half price. We had a lovely time with all these lovely people - they do this and run it purely out of love for the engines! Have a trip out there, your little boys will love it.
