Whale watching

I have promised DS a trip or holiday that will include whale watching. Any recommendations for placard where whales migrate where you are guaranteed to see them and at what time of year?

Iceland! April-September(ish) if I remember right. Don't think you're ever guaranteed to see them but you have a very fair shot.

specialsubject · 17/03/2018 09:27

Nowhere will give a guarantee, the whales haven't got a contract! Hope you are lucky.

Well, we went to Monterey in July after watching the BBC Big Blue documentary and the whale watching trip was disappointing - we saw a couple. That said, we saw several from the California coast so we might just have been unlucky.

I would check out Iceland as suggested, Vancouver Island and the Azores. That said, whale sharks are pretty amazing and you can swim with them too - try South Ari Atoll in Maldives March - April, and Baja California in Mexico.

we saw between 12 and 20 whales bubble net feeding in Alaska two years ago - we were incredibly lucky because none of the trips before us that day had seen more than one or two.

MyVisionsComeFromSoup · 17/03/2018 11:18

that was in August btw

Ethelswith · 17/03/2018 11:22

There a good chance from the Azores

Vancouver Island July
Kaikoura, NZ in December - long way to go though!

mummymeister · 17/03/2018 12:24

We went to Canada in July/August and we did a long trip out seeing lots and lots of whales.

TheEmmaDilemma · 17/03/2018 13:06

Off to the Azores next week hoping to see some!!

broadsheetbabe · 17/03/2018 14:44

Hermanus near Cape Town is fab for whale watching. SA is a great destination for children too, plenty to see and do

dontcallmethatyoucunt · 17/03/2018 15:00

We saw them in NZ in Dec
We will go to try in Iceland in August
Also Sri Lanka in Jan

My DSiS went to Canada in August and saw loads.

sunmonkey · 17/03/2018 15:30

I would second South Africa, Hermanus is especially good I think for most of the year. Cape Town area as well - but I think Aug and Sept are the best times for that area. I've been many times as have family there and its not so expensive once you're there.

Hersetta427 · 17/03/2018 15:48

Thanks all. I have swim with whale sharks and mantas in the Maldives. Think Iceland may be a good option. We loved it there and it would be a good excuse to return.

New Zealand...off Kaikoura ( sp?) . Remember the anti sea sickness tablets though!

Branleuse · 17/03/2018 16:32

We saw pilot whales in Tenerife on a whale watching trip, which was cool, but not as spectacular as id hoped. Maybe it would have been better in the summer.

ive heard the Azores is the place to see a better variety. Id love to

chemenger · 18/03/2018 17:14

Boston and Cape Cod are a good bet, we saw multiple humpbacks last summer.

penguinsandpandas · 18/03/2018 18:59

We are seeing them in Port Stephens in Australia this year, also can do in Sydney and up by Cairns. They do give guarantees.

WickedGoodDoge · 24/03/2018 18:07

I agree with chemenger . I grew up in Massachusetts and went on lots of whale watches- obviously not a guarantee, but we always saw whales.

We’re going to Vancouver this summer and will be doing a whale watch.

KellyMarieTunstall2 · 24/03/2018 18:10

Another vote for South Africa, Hermanus. We're going in October, I hope the whales will wait for us.

DeathByMascara · 24/03/2018 18:13

St Cyrus, north east Scotland. Humpback whales off the coast in the summer, can see them from the shore.

jenthehen · 24/03/2018 18:15

The West Coast of Scotland. Boat trip from Gairloch. We have seen scores of Dolphins on every trip (we've been a couple of times). Several Minke Whales and 2 Humpbacks ...amazing : )
