London museums questions.....

BaconAndAvocado · 15/03/2018 10:02

I've just bought a Friends and Family railcard so plan to use it lots to get to London in the Easter holidays.

Haven't been to the museums in a couple of years....

  1. What's happened to the Natural History's amazing Launchpad?
  1. Is the Science museum's Wonderlab any good?
  1. Any ideas for other museums/attractions for kids aged 9 and 11. The 11yo is extremely interested in gaming/computers/technology and the 9 yo is extremely interested in writing (chalk and cheese!)

Which station would you be travelling through?

If Kings Cross/St Pancras/Euston, then you could easily drop in to the British Library (permanent 'Treasures of' plus whatever special exhibition is on when you're here) plus also the Welcome Collection (more biological sciences, but very interesting and slightly weird)

We will be arriving at St Pancras!

Are there any things unPotteresque for kids to do at the British Library?

My top tip is to take a picnic and head to the pool and garden in the centre of the V&A (right next to Science M and Nat Hist Mu)

Kids allowed to paddle in pool, its enclosed, you can sit on the grass, there is a coffee and cake stand. A bit of daylight and air in between museums and not claustrophobic and mental like other picnic areas or cafes in the museums.

Tate Modern has a great exhibition on with loads and loads of interactive swings in the Turbine Hall, South bank highly recommended. Take a look at the skateboarders on the South Bank next to Festival Hall too for older kids - mine love it.

Other good museums:

Museum of London is brilliant!
Museum of Childhood in Bethnal Green
London Transport Museum
Imperial War Museum

  1. Haven't been to NHM for a while so not sure, osrry.
  1. Wonderlab at Science Museum is really good yes. Very hands on fun and lots to do.
  1. Other places to go - 11yr old might like the design museum and science museum 9 yr old - V&A / Roald Dahl Museum (outside of London but really worth a visit)

Sorry, just realised, the Launchpad at the NHM was actually at the Science museum!

Love the idea of the swings at the Tate Modern!

Are there any good family activities at the Tate?
