Ideal ages to take DC to Disney Florida?

I was going to ask this on another Disney thread but now can't find it.

Mine are 7 and 4 and we are planning to go next year so they'll be 8 and 5. Is this too young? Should we leave it a little longer?

Suggestions on the other thread seemed to be saying this was too young.

Oh, and while I'm here, what's the best time of year to go?

I took my (bigger than average) lads when they were 10, 8 and 6.

I wouldn't have taken them any younger, and we did consider leaving it for another year.

Time of year depends on lots of factors.

katherinez · 07/05/2007 15:33

We went with our dc when they were 3 and 18 months. Had an amazing time, just a shame the youngest wont remember it. I dont think yours would be too young though. We went 2 weeks before christmas which worked really well. Not too much queueing at all. Loads of special shows and parades and the decorations and christmas lights were amazing. And good for shoping!

OutragedfromTunbridgeWells · 07/05/2007 15:35

I was thinking younger would seem a bit more magical?

So 5 seems too young?

Timne of year I'd prefer summer but is it too hot to enjoy?

Or easter but is it too busy?

Sorry I know there are thousands of Disney threads.

My lads found it magical at their ages anyway.

I wanted my lads to be able to go on all the rides (youngest is tall for his age) and to remember as much as possible, as it was (in theory) the one and only time we were going.

We also went over Christmas and didn't find it too bad at all in the run-up, although I understand that Christmas week is hectic.

I personally wouldn't dream of going at summer, but then we're all fairskinned, and gingery or blond.

Not sure about Easter.

katherinez · 07/05/2007 15:42

Our girls loved it. They did/still do think it was all real, all the characters, cinderellas castle etc. Tinkerbell flying though the sky!

Milliways · 07/05/2007 15:45

We went Feb half term + following week & temp was in 70's.Also, v.small queues so ideal time!

Mine were 9&4. 9yr old got on ALL rides, even the huge Island of Adventure ones, 4yr old had a magical time, met characters & still went on loads of fast rides (just not ones that went upside down!)

Starmummy · 07/05/2007 15:50

We went when Ds was just 9. It was fab. I think any age is magical for them. He loved all the characters, and could recognise and relate to them He still says its his best ever holiday. I've just asked him what age would be best and he said he loved it, however when pressed he said he would maybe have enjoyed it when he was younger purely becasue it was Disney. At 9 he wasnt quite so Micky orientated.

We went in October half term, weather was fab, not too hot,no queues. And the food and drink festival (yeh).

You must plan to get the best out of it. I did a spreadsheet with where to be on what day at what time. I'm not normally like that but it paid off. Ds got to pull the sword from the stone, have his hair cut in the barbers shop, drive the monorail, so much stuff. DS favourite was Epcot, loads to do not at all what you expect. We also went to cirque du soliel which was brilliant. Considering DH and I didnt want to go we really enjoyed it. And would conceivably think about going again sometime in the future.

tinpot · 07/05/2007 15:54

Summer will be hideously hot and humid - unbearable in my opinion. I don't know how people do it. Easter is spring break in the US so very busy. Hurricane season is June to October, so could be a factor. We went in February and like previous poster the weather was perfect. Your children seem good ages to go. It will still be 'magical' and they will also be able to go on most of the rides.

DD has been to DW at age 2y4m and 4y2m, and to DLP at 18m, 3y and 4y8m. Has enjoyed different thngs at each age, but always had a lovely time. DLP we have only ever done for short periods really, compared to DW for two weeks.

Will take DD again when a bit older. She is now tall enough for most of the Disney rides, bar the masive roller coasters.

DD doesn't really feel the heat and humidity doesn't bother her wither. We have been to Florida in the summer both times and it has been fine. had hurricane first time but it only stopped our fun for half a day.

OutragedfromTunbridgeWells · 07/05/2007 16:07

Hmm Feb half term sounds good. Would probably take them out for one week extra eother side .

We're only planning to go once in thoery too, so do want to get most out.

I have been twice pre children first when I was 11 and then when 20 ans loved it both times.

I was also thinkng of just one week in Disney asnd then a week on the coast. Any ideas about that?

katherinez · 07/05/2007 16:14

We spent a couple of days on the coast. Did tampa bay. Didnt spend as much time there as we would have liked and then went to busch gardens at the same time.

twinsetandpearls · 08/05/2007 00:45

we are taking our dd this summer and she will be a few weeks off six, this is th eonly time I can do Florida as I am a teacher

claret1980 · 13/06/2007 11:53

We are talking our kids this year, our dd is 3 and our ds will be 1 when we are there. I think that any age is ok to take them unless you want to rides the coasters all the time.

babyblue2 · 13/06/2007 11:55

We aren't planning to go until they are 7 and 9 or 8 and 10. Worried we'd spend all that money and then they'd forget about it too quick. Would love to take them now (4 and 2) but IMO i'd be taking them for me (to see how excited they were) and not them who would probably get too tired too fast and whinge etc.

Listmaker · 13/06/2007 12:07

We went at Easter with all our dds - 16, 15, 12, 9 and 7 and it was great for all of them! The 7 year old couldn't get on some upside down rides but didn't want to go on them anyway. Think it's great for any age but under 7 and they might miss out on some things imo.

We went at Easter and it was busy but we did everything we wanted to and the second week was quieter when the Americans had gone back to school. It was pretty hot and humid some days then so the summer would be really bad. Feb sounds ideal really but having older ones they couldn't really miss too much school although having said that they missed 4 days anyway!

claret1980 · 13/06/2007 12:09

A holiday is for everyone. Yeah, kids whinge at the best of times. I'm taking the pushchairs for them so that if they are tired they can have a sleep etc. I don't think that they forget that easy. We keep a photo album of all the events - hols/Christmas/birthdays etc. they can look back and see where they have been when they were younger.

SoupDragon · 13/06/2007 12:11

DSs had a whale of a time at 4.5 and 2.5! They were entranced by the characters and the whole set up. There were very few things that they wanted to go on that they couldn't TBH. Afternoon tea with Pooh and friends was a huge hit.

dollyk · 23/06/2007 10:09

I took my kids when ds was 5 and dd was 2.5 they had the best time ever my kids loved all the parks we got to do them all .everyone told me that dd was to young to enjoy it what a load of crap she had the best time ever they are still talking about it now,

SlightlyMadSugar · 23/06/2007 10:12

So do I sense that any age is great - they just get different things out of it?

Hulababy · 23/06/2007 10:14

Well DD has been to Florida/Disney at 2y4m and 4y2m, and both times had a fantastic time, as did the adults. She's been to DLP too and always enjoyed it. She has enjpyed it in different ways each time, and she is keen to go again - maybe next year, we will see. DD still talks about both her Florida trips.

We went in August and then June. Little difference between the two. Not necessarily most ideal time but we are now governed by school holidays so have no choice anymore. It wa shumid and hot but TBH once you are int he parks you spend so much time on rides, in air conditioed places or in queues wth fans/water mists prays you don't notice. Had some rain most days but you see it coming and it doesn't last long - we just went for a drink/snack at those times.

Both times DD just kept going - she couldn't get enough of it. Was in the parks for up to 12 hours at a time!

Hulababy · 23/06/2007 10:16

SMS - yes! Disney is fine for every age IMO. But I guess if it is going to be a one off once ina lifetime type trip, I'd do it when a bit older. Although leave it too late and the magic of the characters starts to fade when they no longer believe it is all real. But the older/taller ones can go on more of the bigger rides.
