I have to go down to Reading next week for a funeral and DF is driving half way from Glasgow and dad is meeting us. We can't do a swap over at a services as we'd be pointing the wrong way, lol. Anyone suggest somewhere about a mile from a junction about half way. Dad seems to think Wigan is half way.

i used to live near wigan, we were just off junction 27, will have a think. will you have kids with you?

Forgot to put that we will have my almost 13 month old with us. Doesn't have to have changing facilities as we can do that in the car.

there's the wiggin tree, parbold. its a brewers fayre so food, not fantastic but its large, serves all day and easy to find. come off a junction 27, head towards parbold, and before you get to the village, its on the right, on the top of parbold hill. you get a great view all the way from north wales to blackpool from the hill (we used to live in parbold until last july)

further south, off junction 22, there's more of a gastro pub. the swan at winwick, this is a chef & brewer place. food much nicer. come off m6 at junction 22, head towards warrington on the a49, at roundabout, turn right to winwick, pub is just there on the right. also serves all day.

if you are just looking for somewhere to pull off the motorway and get sorted rather than have a break and eat. at junction 27, there is a bp garage off the roundabout, and also one at the junction with the a580, i think its junction 23. both involve coming off the motorway and you can get back on going in either direction.

The Brewers Fayre sounds good, although it's not on the website. I bet it's changed hands as have the 2 local ones here. I'll let my dad know and he can decide. Thanks for your help.

have a look in the alistair sawday pub guides - they are really lovely and say if they welcome children or have a garden. They tend to do good food rather than chicken in a basket type things so they feel like a nice place to stop rather than motorway station. You might need to book.

I would head down to Knutsford (south of ship canal/Thelwall Viaduct) and go into the town - a couple of miles which has lots of nice places to eat.
