We stayed in the Washington Square a la Bob Dylan - but we are aging hippies!

pindy · 04/05/2007 00:39

We are going in the summer and staying in a hotel near the Holland Tunnel - will find detals if you like?

mamama · 04/05/2007 00:44

Time Square - any of the hotels round there should be fine and it is a great location - nr all the nighttime action, 5th Avenue shops & not far from the park, Macy's or the Empire State building (all within walking distance)

I have stayed at the Sheraton, Westin & 2 other Times Square hotels & they were all ok.

dollyk · 04/05/2007 10:12

Pindy what area its that in?

Mamama which hotel was the best out of those I have be looking at the sheraton

Last time we stayed at The Hudson, which was lovely and v. near to central park. For places to eat I'd definitely get the Time Out guide and go to anywhere in there that says it's good for brunch. NY brunches are fabulous.

Don't stay in the Hudson. The rooms are tiny and it is as dark as Hogwarts everywhere.
There's a Hyatt opposite Grand Central which is OK

ediemay · 04/05/2007 10:15

eeek cross posted with SSM!
Sorry but the Hudson drove us mad - perhaps it was because we were there for too long

Budababe · 04/05/2007 10:18

Were there at Easter and stayed at the Sheraton on 7th and 53rd. It was fine. Rooms a bit small but I think that is fairly standard in NY. It's right by theater district and less than 10 mins from Times Sq.

Sunyshineymummy · 04/05/2007 10:24

I liked the Hudson and there's a lovely restaurant. DP stayed at Tribeca Grand last time and also liked that.

dollyk · 04/05/2007 10:32

Maceys.

Maceys.

Maceys.

Remember the line in Friends when Rachel gets the job in Bloomingdales and Phoebe says "it's like the mother-ship has called her home"? Well that's how I felt!

An American friend here recommended it to me as they have a HUGE plus size department and I am a size 24. I loved it - couldn't believe the selection of "big" clothes. Thank God for all those large Americans!!

Maceys has 9 floors. You could easily spend a day there.

dollyk · 04/05/2007 10:44

I just cant wait I went to macys in florida but is wasnt that big and the doller is really good at the moment so all the better for me LOL

Hi dollyk-just got back from New York and stayed at The Sofitel on West 44th St.
Its a block from Times squ so the location is fab for everything. Midtown really is your best option as everything (park, shops, Empire state etc) are all walking distance.
Its the No 1 hotel in NY on Tripadvisor and have to say it was brilliant.
The rooms and bathrooms are huge which is really unusual in New York and its relatively quiet (which is VERY unusual in New York!)
Let me know if you need any tips

dollyk · 06/05/2007 14:14

Hi spook is it very expensive to stay there ,I dont no if I should go for 5 days or a week ,how long did you go for. I want to do all the tourist things as well as shopping

spook · 06/05/2007 14:20

Hello
Well-it wasn't cheap but the exchange rate is so amazing that it worked out about £160 a night. But I'm sure they have cheaper rates. Go direct through the hotels website for the best deals. I was there for 5 days and there was absolutely loads more we could've done. But-it is a frenetic holiday and I think after a week I would've been absolutely exhausted!

dollyk · 06/05/2007 15:05

spook who did you fly with?

pinkspottywellies · 06/05/2007 15:27

We stayed at the Comfort Inn Manhattan in Sept 06. We went with Virgin for 5 days and it was quite reasonable.

The Comfort Inn was just round the corner from Macy's and the Empire State Building and walking distance from Times Square. Breakfast was included which is unusual in that style of hotel but it's attatched to a bar/restaurant so every morning we had bagels/cereal/toast/fruit/coffee/juice/donuts and then didn't really eat till the evening so I think we saved quite a lot of money that way.

We went to the Empire State Building twice - night time and first thing in the morning (8am very quiet -good time to go!) Statue of Liberty, horse and carriage round central park, FAO Schwartz to see the piano from BIG, Grand Central Terminal - all the 'sights'. It was amazing and I'd recommend New York to anyone! Oh and we came back with an extra suitcase!

spook · 06/05/2007 15:36

Dollyk-we had the misfortune to fly with American Airlines. Great seat pitch but dreadful service. We had to pay for our drinks which I have NEVER had to do on a scheduled flight before and the terminal at JFK is hideous!
But....check in and security were unbelievably quick compared to Virgin and BA coz its such a shitty little terminal so that made a massive difference. And-it's cheap. But bear in mind it's a bit like Ryanair but for 8 hours!

dollyk · 08/05/2007 14:36

spook I have just had a look at that hotel is looks lovely I am going to be booking soon ,
