East Europe road trip with 5yo

We are hoping to spend three weeks in Eastern Europe this August. DH and DS will do two weeks on the road and then a week by the beach somewhere with me.

Any east Europe experts out there? We thought we'd do Croatia at the beach, so we'd fly in and out of there, but no concrete plans yet.

Where would you go, assuming they'll do a few days in each spot and want to do a mix of nature / wildlife / castles. Where is the most fun for kids?

TIA

I'd head north into Austria. Visit Familypark Neusiedlersee which has rides, playgrounds and a petting zoo. I'd then push on up to Vienna, via Carnuntum Roman City and nearby national park Donau Auen. Vienna has a huge amount to do for all interests.
Budapest would also be on my list. Theres an excellent Zoo, the Grand Circus, several awesome swimming pools, some cave tours just outside the city centre and (surely the highlight for any 5yo boy: Miniversum - a vast miniature railway with lots of buttons to press). This is in addition to the Children's Railway. A cruise on the Danube is highly recommended and Margaret Island is the place to go for a picnic!

I strongly recommend the Slovenian lakes. Beautiful.

Don't drive on the Croatian roads Friday or Saturday (they are accommodation change over days and the queues are horrendous). Bosnia is great - Sarajevo and Mostar.

Croatia is a trip in itself. Fly in to Trieste in italy. Drive to Slovenia you could go to lake bled first. Its not too far from Ljubljana so go there too.

Slovenia borders the istrian region of Croatia. There a lovely vineyards where you can get fab red wine in a plastic bottle just refill from the barrel. Great when your toddler is in bed.

There are some beautiful villages in inland istria. Coastal i would go to rovinj definitely then along to the canal or river that goes inland past there (seaside resorts of umaq, novigrad, porec, vrsar, etc might be worth stopping to eat lovely seafood and there are nice play parks in Croatia. Better than many other European countries for those kind of kid friendly facilities.i particularly liked the pirate ship one in vrsar. You can get boat trip up that canal from here too.

Pula worth a visit whilst in istria.

You should go inland to the piltivice lakes.

Zadar could be good. I dont know tge kavarna region.
The next good tourist thing i know before split is Trogir. Absolutely lovely.

Head towards Split. Its a really great city. Lots to see roman ruins great shops and restaurants really lively. For the dc there is a great park at the marina end of the city towards the big forest park on a hill.

From split there is krk national park which has beautiful waterfalls.

Heading down towards Dubrovnik is the highlight.

Eastern Europe is a huge area to cover. Budapest and Prague would be great. So is Vienna. Theyre more central than eastern.

In poland you coukd go to Krakow and warsaw and maybe wroclaw, Gdansk looks good too. Ive got my eye on Sopot near Gdansk as a seaside resort to take the dc to. Its meant to be very child friendly.

In Romania i only went to Bucharest and Brasov and they didnt make much of an impression. I liked the dracula castle area of Romania. That was different. Forget what its called.

Have fun planning your trip. Ive been all over eastern europe but not seen enough of it.

Wow, these are great recommendations, thanks so much.

The Dracula castle would go down very well, if you remember the name @ZenNudist I'd love to know.

You could fly into Zagreb. From there it is 3 hours to Zadar or 4 hours to Split. Add another 3 (at least) to Dubrovnik.
Split has Roman ruins outside - Solin- which is an extensive Roman site. Then there is the Diocletian palace in split, which takes a morning to see. Trogir is quite good too- another couple if hours or longer if you stay for lunch.
The advantage of Zagreb is that it is very close to the borders for Hungary, Serbia and Slovenia.
I don't think croats think if themselves as Eastern Europeans though. SEE maybe, but on the coast, they talk about being Mediterranean people.
Car hire will be cheaper and more plentiful up by Zagreb. Slovenia is cheaper still.

I think you're thinking of Bran Castle in Transylvania. Rather a long way if you're flying into and out of Croatia though.

Hmm. TBH they live a good castle. If anyone else can recommend a castle or two that would be very helpful.

This thread is great Smile
