Travel abroad with 8 month old

I’m looking to book some time away in September to visit family in Spain but not sure what I need to take with us. My little one will be 8 months old when we plan to go. My family won’t have a car seat and all the necessities so I have to think of what I need. Has anyone travelled before & known what they can take on the plane etc?

How exciting! With most airlines you’ll be able to check a pushchair and car seat for free and you usually get an extra carry-on in the form of a nappy bag for the baby.

Other than that I’d plan to travel pretty light and dispatch family to the shops before you arrival for wipes/nappies etc. although if baby is FF you’ll probably need to bring this with you as brands are different abroad.

You can also take liquids for the baby (think baby food pouches, bottles, cool boiled water in a sippy cup) through security and onto the plane even though they’re over a 100ml.

I think that’s it... airlines are usually super nice and allow you early boarding/family zone bag drop and security etc. with kids so it’s definitely not something to fear!

Besides the usual baby stuff you'll need during the trip, bring along a change of clothes, a blanket/lovey (or anything that helps baby sleep well), snacks, and a trash bag to toss things like dirty diapers and empty cups. Bring a first-aid kit. Of course, you don't want any mishaps to occur, but it's always wise to be prepared just in case. Take along any prescription medications that your baby requires, baby Tylenol in case a fever occurs or baby is teething, diaper rash treatment, and, of course, bandages and first aid ointment.

If you visit family I would try to ask them to borrow items for your stay like a car seat/travel cot/high chair to minimise your luggage.

Otherwise while your baby does not have its own allowance most airlines allow a buggy/car seat but def check with the airline first.

Def change of clothes and more nappies than you think you may need at the airport. We had a 3 hour delay one year. Plane toilets are not designed for nappy changing, we always changed pre-boarding and only for a poo or a leak.

You can take food/water/bottles through. We travelled via various airports and it seems each one has its own idea how to interpret the rules. We had to test water but not closed ready made formula packs. Fruit pouches was a hit and miss.

I heard, never done it, that you can order formula to be collected at Boots after security at some airports, that may be something you want to look at if you bottle feed.

First aid kit and a travel insurance.

Is this visit likely to be repeated? I have ILs in Spain. We bought a high chair from IKEA there. They borrowed a travel cot and we took a buggy and car seat as our 2 child items on the plane.
We always took enough nappies and wipes for the journey and first day, then bought the rest when we arrived.
