Good evening,
My dh is obsessed with travelling to Chile.
I think it looks overwhelming vvvvv Long ( and thin, opposite of me really - ha maybe why he’s picked it!,,)
We are not really very active types tbh
We like scenery from some kind of transport usually.
We like food we like wine.
We like mooching around cities/towns
We quite like a wild night out
We like nice hotels.
Any advice re achieving this in Chile v gratefully received

We are shortly off to Argentina. I love South America. Chile will be next.

Yes, it’s long and thin. Most itineraries will suggest you do middle and North or middle and South. Consider Easter Island but it adds time and money to the holiday but for us it is a must.

We buy Lonely Planet guides before we go anywhere. They are great for inspiration, itineraries and hotels, places to see and restaurants. We also use country specialists. Agents who have been and actually know their stuff. You could look at group tours too. Most itineraries have internal flights to maximise time in each location. The main thing is do not try and do too much.

Highlights are - Patagonia, Torres Del Paine NP, Glacier region, Easter Island, Valparaiso, Santiago, the Atacama desert, El Tatio geysers, the volcanoes of the Los Flamencos Np, and Tierra del Fuego. As you could spend a lot of time travelling it’s better to concentrate on a the south or the North. Not both. Include at least one city. Spanish (or Portuguese) churches all over South America are outstanding. A good agent will give you the best travel and sightseeing options and hotels will be fine. Check out booking.com and agents like Audley or Ultimate for recommended hotels as well as Lonely Planet. If they cross check we are usually happy! We have always stayed in smaller character properties and really enjoyed them.

We have found food in South America to be fantastic and not expensive. I would also recommend the wines! I would expect beef to be readily available as it’s close to Argentina. We have also found that where we have been, Brazil, Peru, a bit of Argentina and Ecuador, that there are numerous culinary influences. It’s fun to eat out.

My biggest tip is to plan carefully, give yourself enough time and do the research so you know what you want to see. Don’t do too much or try and see too much unless you have several weeks!

We would also highly recommend Ecuador. Not too many travellers and the Galápagos Islands are amazing! Peru is also a brilliant choice.

Buenos Aires and Argentina may tick the wild nights out box. Tango clubs come to mind! Lots of music venues in BA too. The same regions as Chile are accessible in Argentina such as the glaciers, Patagonia and the Lake District. We are also going to Mendoza for the wine. Just no Easter Island!

Thankyou so much for this info. Really kind of you to take the time
I think I would prefer Argentina tbh would you be prepared to share your itinerary?

Our holiday itinerary to Argentina has been directed by availability of internal flights! The schedules keep changing so we are not doing everything in the ideal order! We are going in April. We are doing Buenos Aires, 3 nights, Bariloche and Lake District, 5 nights, Calafate for Glaciers, 3 nights, Mendoza area 3 nights. There are some great little hotels and we are going to a tango show in BA. Self driving in Lake District. Various other excursions are included and we booked our own flights with Avios. Tour organised by Steppes Travel, who have been helpful. We are not going South to Patagonia as it’s a bit too late in the season. Will save that for another time! However everywhere else should be decent weather and autumn colours. Again Lonely Planet and Hotel booking sites have informed choices.

Maybe Southern Chile, Patagonia and Easter Island (I have to go there!) for the future? Hope so.
