Anyone have any tried and tested ways to stop young children screaming the plane down with take off and landing due to sore ears?

Give them some neurofen 30mins before take off - apparently it eases any pain...tried it with DS when we recently went abroad and he was fine both ways...

I give dd teething powders as they contain cammomile, also distracts her and makes her swallow. I also give her a lollipop or sweet.

Sweets to suck. Swallowing does the trick.
Ear pain in planes is absolutely excrutiating.

Get the ears checked before you go , might have a build up of wax which presses on the drum on take off and landing. Easily removed by drops a few nights before. I flew regularly when small and they discovered this age 5 ...never suffered since !

If old enough get cabin crew to put napkin in plastic cup sort of folded at the bottom and put hot water on napkin. Make sure absorbed and not dripping and then hold over ear when plane going down -like a telephone sounds mad but it works!

Sucking , chewing,nose blowing....all helps.

Yes Rosa. They talked about that method in Telegraph earlier this week.

When I asked on EJet earlier this year DH was suffering with a cold they thought I was mad! They did provide it however and it helped.

Boots sell these ear plugs which have been a godsend for my DD. They don't work for everyone, but worth a try maybe?

SofiaAmes · 02/05/2007 09:09

When the kids were younger dh used to do this little trick that worked perfectly, but that I could never replicate. He would place his open mouth over both the nose and mouth of the child, create a seal with his lips against their face and blow. Then he'd get them to swallow.

We used to give dd a drink on take off, in a bottle/beaker that she had to suck.

She has flown 6 times & never suffered ear pain.

I too have bought the earplugs from Boots for one of my trio, they do work!

muslinattheready · 04/05/2007 18:14

The holding the mouth and blowing gently definitely works... also (if they are old enough to understand) ask them to pretend to swallow as that works to release the pressure. Or of course weets are always a good bet too (funnily enough) as they do the same thing.

Ha we are following each other Muslinattheready!

oh i sympathise!!
ds and i both get really sore ears when flying so bad we were both crying on our last flight.it felt as if my head would explode!tried swallowing, drinking, chewing and ear plugs and nothings worked for me but the nurofen sounds like a good idea for the little one.flying next week so i'll give it a shot.
