Austrian or French Mountain holidays?

Dh and I are looking for more of an activity holiday this year with our 3 dc (8-12)
A colleague of mine has suggested Morzine and says it would be a fab base for us. However she hasnt been in the Summer for a number of years so unsure of current facilities with regards to activities.
Recently a friend of dh has suggested Austria for the same kind of holiday. He has spent time there in Summer recently but hasnt been to France in Summer.
I wonder if anyone has recently been to both areas and if anyone can suggest areas other than Morzine / Les Gets that might suit us.
We are fairly active family, all enjoying biking & swimming.

I have read the other thread by another poster who is heading to Morzine and got some good information from there too.

If you’re an adventurous family I would really recommend the Dolomites in Northern Italy. Stunning mountains, beautiful walks and cycles and you can try via ferrata which is amazing fun.... there’s areas where the tunnels and bunkers built in WW2 are exactly as they were left with sandbags and bunk beds etc.
Otherwise I prefer France over Austria simply for the food! The walks are similar levels of gorgeousness, but just check if the area has ski lifts open in summer as that can help you cover much more ground.

Thanks downinfragglerock that's useful information. We have been to Italy in recent years and will return, so will add the Dolomites to the list for another year.

The ski lift point is a very good one. I will double check.
Dh likes his food and has lived in France, so his natural choice would be France. So many lovely places to choose from.

Morzine or Les Gets would be great.

Carinthia in Austria would be my recommendation. Lake Ossiach has water sports and water slides, a floating iceberg with climbing walls, designated swimming area, tubing, lakeside beach etc... I think the name of the place to go for all of this is Erlebnisbad Ossiah. There's a nearby go-ape style course, plenty of cycle routes including one that goes right around the lake and canoeing on the river Drau. EasyJet fly from Gatwick to Klagenfurt.

Thanks for the replies. We are spoilt for choice!

Another to add if you haven't made up your mind yet is Chamonix. It is probably the most popular resort in the Alps but with good reason. So much to do, good walks, cycling through the valley, one or two things to do if the weather is bad. We are going again this year. Let Gets is lovely, but, it is very small and out of the way. If the weather isn't good you may be stuck for things to do. I haven't been to Austria for years so can't really give any helpful advice there, although the last time we stayed in Kitzbuhl which was lovely. You might want to consider Switzerland, either Lake Geneva area or Lake Lucerne. Loads of things to do there with children, although Lake Geneva you may have to drive a bit to do some mountain walks. Hotels in Switzerland are expensive (don't know your budget), but self catering is surprisingly cheap. We are staying in Le Bouveret this year (after the week in Chamonix Grin).

Also things you can do in Switzerland if the weather is bad. You can probably see I plan on bad weather in the mountains!
