Camper van trip - Scandinavia Summer 2018 - 2/3weeks

Hi

We are thinking about hiring a camper van this summer and doing a trip to Denmark, Norway, or Sweden? Only been to Stockholm for a City break with DH pre-kids but loved it, even though it was expensive! Under no illusions there, hoping to mix it up and cook a bit ourselves and eat out a bit as well.

Which of the above would you recommend and any suggested places to visit/itinerary’s? Places to avoid?

It would be for me, DH, DS1, 12 and DS2, 10. Well travelled and used to road trips.

I know it’s a bit of a broad ask as they are completely different countries but would appreciate any advice. Not sure where to start!

Many thanks

I'd fly to Billund in Denmark (direct flights available from UK) and hire from there. I'd stay near Billund for a couple of nights and go to the original Legoland and the Karensminde agricultural museum. There are several other good attractions in this area, depending on what your family is into. Billund to Copenhagen is 3hrs, not including a worthwhile stop at Egeskov Castle. You can pitch up very close (8km) to Copenhagen city centre at Charlottenlund Fort. You could easily stay here for 4 or 5 nights and not get bored! There's so much for families to do in the city. I'd then go across to Malmo. Whilst it would be possible to push on up to Gothenburg in one day, I'd stay near Malmo to take the drive a little steadier and stop at Tropikariet and/or Upzone Adventure Park. There's lots to see and do in Gothenburg for a few days and you can catch a Stenaline ferry from Gothenburg to Frederikshaven, north Denmark. The crossing is about 3hrs. It is possible to catch another ferry from Fredrikshaven to Oslo, but I'd leave that for another holiday. Instead, take a 2hr drive to Aarhus and stop for a few nights. Use it as a base to explore The Old Town open air museum, ARoS Musuem of Art, Viking museum, and possibly Denmark's second Tivoli if you fancy another helping of amuseument parks! From Aarhus it's a relaxed journey back to Billund.

Billund is good. We have stayed at Lalandia and used the waterpark as well as visiting LEGOLAND
Aarhus - loads to see and do
Skagen is worth a visit to see where the seas meet at the tip of Denmark

The Gothenburg to Frederikshaven ferry is fine. Much better than Grena - Varberg

The bridge from Denmark to Sweden is convenient and if going from Copenhagen to Gothenburg I would drive straight through and not bother with Malmo
(unless there are things you want to see there)

Other places in Sweden - Dalarna where they make the wooden horses.

Loads to see and do in Stockholm.

The driving is pretty easy over there. Good roads and not too busy. Not sure if camper hire is cheaper in Denmark vs Sweden.

Many thanks for your fab suggestions. More than enough
to get me started.

Can you tell me are you allowed to “free camp” at all? If not then I imagine we would need to pre-book campgrounds being peak holiday time?

We flew to Copenhagen in August for 38 quid each return and rented a cottage with pool on oland for two weeks.

We found eating out not to be expensive. But we had a car and didn’t really drink which may make a difference.

Our two weeks in Sweden with two nights hotel in Copenhagen and hire car cost us £1200 quid in August for 4.

Doesn’t need to be expensive. Looking at skiing in Sweden next year again doesn’t look too scary.

somewhereovertherain thanks for the info. DH Decided he def wants to go to Sweden (although wants to visit all the Nordic countries at some point)!

Can I ask who you booked your cottage through? Have had a look at Airbnb lots of lovely ones....

Sounds like good value, we are same not big drinkers either but love food!

Was looking at hiring a campervan for 2weeks and nearly €4000... getting a cottage and hire car might be a better way to go.

The regions usually have individual tourist websites and you can often book accommodation through them

Booze is expensive in restaurants but a similar price to the UK in the state run off licences
