Insurance for elderly with illnesses

I need to insure flights and stay for my parents who have numerous ailments. Can anyone recommend an insurer who is most affordable for the type of traveller?

depends on their ages. if they are over 85 then forget it it will be prohibitively expensive. most insurers give you a better price if you go for a one year policy. if they have a lot of ailments/serious ones then go through a broker to find you the best deal.

Dalesgirl16 · 21/01/2018 08:19

No they are late 60s and early 70s.

Age UK, Saga?
Depending on the nature of the illness MacMillan can recommend some insurers here

Thank you

My travel agent recommended a firm called Staysure for this issue

specialsubject · 23/01/2018 18:27

Not age UK or saga, will rip you off. Run a travel insurance comparison. Plenty about.

The Post Office were surprisingly good when I spoke to them and not too expensive. They were recommended to me by someone in the industry.

Assuming you are in the UK OP, try
www.medicaltravelcompared.co.uk
You can input their details and it will give you a list of insurers, policies and prices tailored to your DP's needs.

Thank you all

Be careful with comparison sites as the policy will often exclude the condition even if you've asked for it to be included. If you do go down the travel comparison site route do also call the insurer direct to confirm cover.

I can't speak for age concern but saga may be more expensive but the dosometimes cover risks thatwouldn't be looked at by other insurance companis, so don't write them off if you get stuck.

If its arguably to the stage of being a disability, fish disability specialists can be good too

Try Good to Go insurance

woodlanddreamer · 24/01/2018 07:45

My DF had insurance through his bank account. He had to pay extra but it wasn't too bad. Or when he booked holidays through Saga it included insurance.

I’m not elderly, but have a potentially hard to insure condition.

I agree with the advice to look at the insurers recommended on cancer support sites.

I have used Able To Travel (Voyager) because their quote was the middle one, and the person on their phone line was the most helpful.

For specialist medical travel insurance, you can get illustrative quotations without having to give your full personal details upfront (they’ll need age and quite a lot about the medical conditions you need covered, might be worth writing a list of everything you need to mention before hitting the phone)

Wingedharpy

Can I say a big thank you to your comparison site. I have actually got travel insurance for previously uninsurable DS through it. The small print of the document even checks out!!!

Wingedharpy · 26/01/2018 02:42

So pleased to be of help Toffee.
I have "ailments" myself and love to travel so always use a specialist comparison site and declare absolutely everything.

Christmascardqueen · 26/01/2018 03:19

do your parents have some coverage with previous employers?
both mine and my parents retirement packages include travel insurance.

Dalesgirl16 · 27/01/2018 08:19

No sadly not but these replies have been very helpful.

When I had to find similar insurance for a relative I spent an evening going through the list on Moneysavingexpert and inputting the details on several companies' online quote sites. The quotes varied by over £1,000! So it's definitely worth investing the time getting different quotes.

Dalesgirl16 · 01/02/2018 07:48

£1000 is more than their flights! Wow! Their trip has been delayed a bit so I have more time to research all this morning, thanks!

The insurance companies ask lots of questions and pre existing conditions can be ok but it depends what they are. Annual policies may not be of use in this case.

We insured my mum to go on a cruise at 90. P and O had their recommended insurer who insured all the elderly ones! Saga was ludicrous by comparison! Do shop around.
