Could you help me with some packing advice please? DP and I are off to Austria in July. I understand the weather can be mixed and warmer clothes are recommended for hiking at higher areas. Can you tell me what sort of clothing? A base layer, t shirt and fleece, or thermal drawers, 3 layers, a ski jacket and salopets? Any other to tips gratefully received. TIA

I went to Achensee/Pertisau and we went up to about to 1500 metres for a hike - it was boiling hot up there on that day.

Even if it was poorer weather, I can't imagine you'd need salopettes or ski jacket unless you're going up a glacier.

I'd take an outer shell jacket (ie v light and useful it it rains) and a fleece perhaps. It does get cooler in the evenings, for sure.

Ski jacket and salopettes will be much too warm. I've been to Mayerhofen in Summer , did plenty of hiking, and took a thin fleece, a lightweight waterproof jacket, t-shirts, hiking trousers, and a couple of long sleeved thin shirts. Thin layers are your friend. We had mixed weather but it was never that cold.

Thanks @pameladoove. Grin I wasn't planning on taking a ski jacket and salopets! I had read a few posts online about taking warmer clothes even for a summer trip and was trying to gauge how much warmer.

I went to a glacier wearing trousers, t-shirt and a very thin hoody. I was cold, and put my (so so thin) hood up. But I wasn't at the top all that long so no harm done - totally doable. Ideally, I'd probably have had a normal hoody/fleece/lightweight jacket, though. Down at the bottom was t-shirt or t-shirt and thin hoody weather! Grin That was summer, possibly June...or to be honest it could have been September. It was a while back! Very sunny though!

We took jeans and hoodies. Only used them occasionally in the evenings. Lived in shorts and t-shirts when we were there (August). Even did some sunbathing.
We took light tops when we did trips to places like Eagles nest. Didn't always need them but we had some showers. Saw some great thunderstorms in the distance but we always seemed to miss them.

Thanks everyone. I've now got a better idea of what to pack, weather wise.

We wear hiking trousers, thin short-sleeve base layer top, then carry fleece tops and waterproof jackets. If rain forecast and have room then sometimes waterproof trousers, but our hiking trousers are lightweight anyway and would dry quickly. I get quite hot walking so that is plenty for me. The layers are more to protect against wind chill for me.
